Posts: 5 Has anyone seen black discoloration on the sides of the beak black areas as a sign of air sac mites. My LG male has not sung since I had him, his brother seemed fine singing, then seemed not well, got out and hit a window and died some time back. I treated with Scatt, and he seemed better, now he is more listless, and slightly puffy again. I am afraid I do not want to grab him to be able to hear if he is clicking, although he has never seemed to stuggle with breathing. I have canaries and lots of zebras and silverbills, no one else seems to be having any problems, and that, the black on his beak, his only symptom.

Are you able to post a pic, it may help others more determine what might be wrong.

Hello Aboutrelaxing, A photo might help and if you could fill in your location in your profile it will help get specific and accurate answers for your area including possibly where to get any necessary meds. It's possible that he has ASM. Did you give him the second dose of Scatt 21 days after the first does?

In the meantime - he should be in a smaller hospital cage with a heatlamp, seeds and perhaps vitamins in the drinking water to make things easier for him and to keep the other birds from catching whatever he might have.

Well I have been trying to get a pic up, having difficulties I know not computers, need to work on that with my hubbie, but it has been about 10 days since my first good dose of scatt on his neck, I always tried to get the thigh before, it never seemed to do well enough. Marked the calendar and I will retreat, I did the other two, also and thoroughly disinfected their cage and water and food containers, and he is going thru a molt, that has him looking almost polka dot, his color not as strong as it should be. He has a heat lamp, although I have no extra cage to separate him from the other two, I am off to locate one. I realize everyone should probably get the water treatment, from what I have been reading in the other posts. Thanks and hoping to get some pic up this evening.

Was he previously housed with any of the other birds such as the zebs or canaries or has he always been housed seperately?

for a little while,Simon spice and 2 young silverbills were with him in a pretty large flight, they were too flighty for his laid back and I removed them some time back, then got this young pair of LGs that are just going thru their first molt, all 3 are housed together.

Nope never, although the canaries fly free many times, they stick to the high cages ,floor and plants.

Hmm, well I don't know whats wrong with your little fellow. I was thinking maybe he contracted it a second time from another bird, but that does not sound likely... :|
