Bird Factory says "we've never heard of birds getting w

Post by Kathleen » Mon Dec 10, 2007 12:11 am

I was trying to find Scatt, S76 or something similar in all our local pet stores and well as two places that hand raise birds. Well no one had these products for sale and told me I could only get these from a avian vet. Well I knew that was wrong info, but was more shocked about the fact they didn't know what these products were and the owner at The Bird Factory here in Ormond Beach say " we've never heard of birds having worms". Can someone tell me if I got my signals wrong or what....I just orderd online several items for my finches which included both Scatt and S76.

SCATT is mainly indicated for treating Air Sac Mites - while Moxidectin is a wormer, this is not really what the medication is intended for in birds. Same with ivermectin.

If you are looking for a product to specifically treat worms in birds, I would go for one that is actually indicated for that: Morning Bird's Worm Away or Vetafarm's Worm Out Gel are two options.

And the store owner isn't insane - there are not that many cases of worms in birds, and usually when they are, the worms are found in birds of prey or species that eat other animals/insects which carry the parasites or parasite eggs.
Your overage indoor finches will not likely ever suffer from an intestinal worm infection but it's one of those things I treat for in quarantine especially if buying from someone who houses their birds outdoors.

Most stores do not carry avian medicines outside of maybe Erythyromycin and I don't believe the Erythro you can get at PetSmart/PetCo is potent enough to truly be effective.
