What about those rope perches you use Elana? Its wide enough that he can perch/sit, and it gives a bit to give him something to get his talons into.

There's a thought.....
I'll have a look see for some of them in the basement today. They are also bendable, so can adjust them to different heights.

Thanks Babsi :YMHUG:

Well girls, I put the rope perch thingies in the cage. So far no go.

I also performed a bit of surgery, removing some of the dead toes, and a portion of the dead foot, which appeared to be just catching on everything.

The texture of this dead limb, was dry, sort of like brittle old horn, or doggy toe nails. I snipped off a couple of millimeters at a time, checking very carefully for any sign of pink (there was non).

There was no apparent sensation, but when I went to put Max back in the cage, he bit me in thanks, lol.

Max, is fine, other than the fact that he can't fly (lost 3/4 of his wing), and so far can't perch ( due to this dead leg). I am attempting to somehow make an environment for him, where he will be comfortable, and will eventually learn how to perch using his one good leg/foot.

Does Grandfather's Canary, perch normally on only one foot?

Good going my friend! =D> You have done an outstanding job on his injury! You have nerves of steel! Has he tried the rope perch yet? **Edit ** I just saw your post about him now using the perch. I think you may be right about him needing a small branch.

He sort of jumps on it, and falls off.

Don't know about nerves of steel, more like too foolish to know any better :-J

Maybe practice will make perfect. He has to relearn everything. Good for you snipping the dead stuff off. Bravo!

Max is something else he may surprise everybody.

He stands on one leg now and I can hear him sing a house away , but I wasn't there when he amputated his leg I do not know the process of it , how he stopped the bleeding once he amputated it and all that... But if his leg doesn't get any better I think that his dead leg will just make things harder .. I do not know about finches, will he have enough strength or will he get too stressed , you can try getting a small stick and stick it next to his leg and wrap it with something while keeping his leg in a normal position , that's what we did before he amputated his leg , but canaries leg was just too broken it could basacly do a 360 dagree turn so we knew there was no hope of saving it :/ don't trust me on this one ask an expert before you do it if you do it because I think that finches are more sensitive :/

Most of the leg was dead....
So the parts that I snipped off was black and dry, so no worries about bleeding or pain.

Good to hear that Grandpa's Canary, made such a good adjustment, and is doing well :D

Karen...

Yes, he does have to relearn everything, and he's trying.
The poor little fella , no matter how many times he falls on his head, he's still brave, and still trying.

So is the little guy mostly hopping, or does he motorboat around on his stomach and use his wings to "fly" on the floor? O:-)

He's hopping, and occasionally flops and rolls a little. He also sits sort of side-saddle , with his tail folded sideways and half under him for balance. Kinda hard to explain.....
