Yes, because the trachea is a long tube that runs from the bird's throat to its lungs, and transports fresh air for the bird to breathe and that is what you want to illuminate with the pen light.

Thanks for the quick response Debbie :D
I was trying to figure out why put it on the back of the neck and then shine a light on the throat

Trish, you will lose some, no matter what we do, it happens. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, just my thoughts.

Thanks Lou~ Oh don't I know it! I was very lucky. And if I ever get any Goulds I know from the Forum, I will have to be extra careful about ASM treatment. I do think it's a good idea to treat periodicly. Like you say, ounce of prevention.

From everything I've read, prophylactic treatment can only be beneficial if the bird has an active air sac mite infection and preventative treatment will do nothing to prevent future infections.

O.K I should have made my post a little clearer, I didn't mean to treat the birds for a.s.m every now and then but, only when they have them. what I meant was about the ( ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure) environment/ hygiene. Sorry about that.
