It might have been airborne or/and easily carried on her clothing or in the air as birds flew about and stirred things up. It is always wise toquarantine in a separate room, feeding and watering healthy birds first then the quarantine. Hope you find out what happened

Anna, I was very upset about Pap. My little girl has been cooing at night ever since. I removed him when it first started, to make things easier on him and so I could medicate him, but he passed away. It was very sad. Atleast I have his baby. She is grown now and will stay with her momma of course. It's so odd because they both seem fine.
I will contact the vet in Lex. It's only 45 min away.

Cindy, I will keep everyone posted. If I can figure out what it is, then I can let everyone else know and it might save others from having to go through it. I hope there is a treatment and it is curable.

If you don't have access to an avian vet and you suspect ornithosis, a 3 day treatment with doxycycline will usually show eveidence if the birds have this or not. If they do have it then you would want to treat with the doxycycline for the full course.
Best of luck to you and your birds.

Meagan, I'll be keeping your birds in my thoughts/prayers. [-o< I hate that this happened to your birds -- we all have to be aware that such things can happen to any one of us. :(

Yes, that is strange that Pap was the only one who passed -- and strange, period, because my doves are always the hardiest birds I have -- Peace is still doing well and has a new mate. She's about 5 years now.

Please keep us informed as soon as you find something out.

Does anyone know what the symptoms of a protozoa infection are? This medication does not even explain what to look for.

Protozoan infections will show up in the poop, but only in advanced stages. YOur birds will be very thin at this point so you would notice the going light faster than anything else.

It really sounds like your birds have a gastric infection. Those are quick killers too. See what the vet can find. Gastic infections are usually easy to treat.

A friend suggested Ronivet and even gave me what I needed to treat all of my birds. I have seen an almost complete turnaround in the birds. My female canary still has high urates in her poop. Maybe she has liver problems from it. I may treat again in a few months to see that it does not resurface.
The seizures that had occurred still do not make much sense to me except to assume that the infection might have been bad enough to prevent them from absorbing enough calcium??? But I was administering liquid calcium at the time so I just don't know.

I'm just glad you were able to help your birds with the Ronivet. Hopefully things have turned around for your flock now.

I am so paranoid about my birds I think I have every medicine anyone ever suggests in my medicine chest... (but my real problem is diagnosing problems correctly... so many symptoms are present for multiple illnesses -- but that's why I'm so glad there are so many experienced people on the FF.)

Thank you for the update, Meagan. :)

Meagan...make sure you follow the treatment up with a few days of probiotics. Can't hurt!

Meagan, that whole ordeal sounds just awful :( I really hope you get good results with the Ronivet!

monotwine wrote: Ornithosis really manifests with the fluffed bird and swollen eye. I had something like that and it turned out to be a bacterial problem not ornithosis, which was easily sorted out with Baytril. It never returned.
Do you know if Baytril is available for order, or do you have to get it from a veterinarian? I have a gouldian with one eye closed who fluffs, and I put her on tetracycline... But I'm sort of nervous about continuing if it could be something else; I don't want to give her thrush!
