The newspaper definitely will not hurt nor be the cause of any illness. I've been using newspaper without grates for over 6 years.

I hope all your birds get back to 100% real soon! [-o< [-o<

When I bring new birds into the house, I quarantine them for 4 weeks with the following routine: Scatt and Wormaway. Vitamins if I think they don't appear 100% healthy. That's it, that's all.

Good luck Erica!!

Like you, I worry about over dosing with too many meds.

Who is Snowflake?

The problem with not doing some kind of preventative with birds in quarantine is that they may present ok with a good diet but stress from breeding can weaken the system and that is when the parasites can really take hold. Or if they have them but able to hold them off they can pass them onto young and the young fledge then all of the sudden start going light and die off one by one or they don't even make it to fledging and die in the nest. In the case of the birds dying in the nest many people look at it as the parents are poor parents or the breeders blame themselves.

Sometimes you have to out weigh options of giving preventitives or not or treating when you actually have an issue, sometimes by that time there is no cure. This article explains it more in detail.

I go with be safe than sorry later, especially when the background and care of a bird is in question.

I don't think any of Erica's birds have been bred yet.

Liz, if she plans to breed them she should really treat and clear this up prior. Right now she has an issue and the birds were ill and relapsing. She treated with Tetratex but that will help fight infection but not bacterial and it will do nothing for the bird if it has parasites. Her birds are passing undigested seeds and ill.

They Were Passing undigested seed, they are pooping Normally now But! I have never really done anything about parasites Cause I never knew, and Snow flake, she is the white Zebra finch hen, her bottom is full of matted yellow feathers that I clean OFTEN, but It never seems to go away. I do believe the parasite protozoa is affecting her Because she keeps lapsing into respiratory issues, I keep having to Dose her with Tetratex by syringe, She doesn't like the medicine and gets very little in her system unless I make her take it. And she has been exposed to everyone, before this got out of hand, not within cage, but they are tamed and come out to play.

In essence I believe that your right about the parasite, Just because of her symptoms, and I want to get rid of this before it kills her.
She's not going to breed per say, but I got her a mate for companionship. I am not ready to Breed anyone at this time.

And I would have dealt with snowflakes parasite issue if everyone had have told me rather then pinning the problem on being egg bound. Egg bound Snow flake is not, she has passed an egg without Issue, It just brought on the problem with this parasite.

Yea I do fear over dosing, so I have to get this at Bay with Snowflake, but I want to get everyone else on an Even Keel and when she's been off the tetratex for 3-4 day's I will get her on the Ronex.

I don't know that tetratex will work on what she has, it may be this:
http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/product_coccicare.ph
http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/featur ... diosis.php

First thing I would do is call ladygouldian.com explain (you can email also might be quicker) what is happening that you have sick birds, undigested seed being passed, wet dirty bottoms. Let her know you have not done a preventive as of yet. She will recommend the right meds for you. Also tell her you have been giving her tetratex.

Mind you I am making a guess as to what could be wrong but you have few things happening and they need specific care. If she has coccidia you may need to do a preventive for the rest of the flock with both ronex and coccicare or just coccicare. Best to ask, especially since Snowflake just relapsed. Ask Larraine what is the best way to treat her and the flock. Once she advises you and if you order meds, it is important to clean the cage and cups well.

I agree in having to get this cleared up asap - I just thought you were saying that breeding may have brought this on. I misread/understood.

I agree, with it I will give em whatever they need, but their no longer pooping seed =-=' Yet Snowflake I'd really like to know what the heck is going on so I will give them a call in the morning.

Not sure this is Cocci, just because she lives with an owl finch, and Mei rin doesn't seem Ill, but I'll treat her to be on the safe side, and they say that Owl finches can get Cocci infections the worst.

She relapsed, but not major, Minor clicking I gave her the meds and she stopped. Tetratex is meant to cure Respiratory infections of any kind.

This is getting Highly overwhelming.

any bird can pick up coccidia by ingesting water and food that has been pooped in by a sick bird that has it, they can even get it from pecking the bottom of the cage if it has droppings on it.

It is good you are calling ladygouldian...she can tell you exactly how to treat the issue with the two birds.

I see what Happened here, Everyone is putting Both the Symptoms that I mentioned earlier on Snowflake.

Snowflake is a white Zebra finch hen that has proven that she is not Egg bound and can lay egg's, she's experiencing being uncomfortable with yellow crusted feathers around her vent, that her normal poop seems to stick to, she is indeed a stubborn bird that doesn't like to take things such as medicine that tastes terrible, So I have to make her.
She laid an egg without trouble but all of a sudden got Respiratory issues and is on the mend, she's taking longer because of she is stubborn. She DOES NOT have seedy stools. By the Way Can someone please advise me on how to get her to have a bath, She Completely hates taking baths.

Haru, A society finch that L in Ontario sold me, and she was the one that got the Seedy Bowels, She was on Tetratex for about a week and Had Baby apple sauce given to her for 3 days straight, 3 times a day, Since she's been off the tetratex she has been fine, normal poop, eating normally and playing with the other female societies in the cage with her and is far more trusting of her humans. I DON'T Believe this is Liz's Fault, this is just one of those things that happens, and we just have to work it out. It's been Worked out and Haru is Feeling 100% better!

So It seems we have gotten 2 different birds with 2 different symptoms and pinned them both on poor Snowy, This is not the case.

Everyone keeps saying it's a parasite, Personally in my opinion I'd like to worm and Ronex, maybe Cocci care everyone, Just so if this parasite happens to exist in anyone here it goes away peacefully.

I hope this clears things up for everyone. @-@''

No problem Liz...I was just saying if she ever wants to breed it that it was best to get to the bottom of things so to speak and find out what is causing the problem.

Can a transfer of bacteria possibly happen if there is no grate separating them? I say this because I was originally using papers from my sister in law in a cage like this, and stopped. They raise turkeys, and broilers and are not careful about touching the birds, washing their hands and touching things in the house. He actually touched a raw bird to his drinking glass to pour ice into it and was going to drink out of it! I realized then that I could contaminate my birds and started using other paper. Also change my clothes and wash my hands, etc. after visits. Just thought of that is this case. I wonder what can get transfered from newspapers if the birds come in actual contact with them. Just a thought. By the way, I'm learning so much by your responses Cindy to various posts.

@ Corkysgirl, Careful with this, Because it seems cindy got confused and thought the symptoms were belonging to 1 bird not 2 different birds.
I'd hate to think it was Me T-T' these guys of mine are all hand tamed, and are handled, Their my Babies T-T', and I always wash my hands before handling.
