The temp in their room is about 74 but if you think a heat lamp will help I will attach one. We have several. He is looking better today. The area around the eye that was the worst (so swollen you could see the skin between the feathers) is looking much better and I can't see the pink skin any more. However, there is still a lot of swelling so we aren't over the hump yet. Does anyone know the chances of recovery? I'm so worried! I was very lucky to find these two.

I would complete the round of meds and if after stopping it, the swelling returns I would call ladygouldian and ask if something like a broad spectrum is required. After this course of amoxitex I would give him probiotics for 3 to 4 days, keep him warm and watch him.

I hope he recovers fully.

Thanks Cindy, I hope so too. I have a broad spectrum antibiotic (Erythromycin for birds) and probiotics in their medicine box.

See how he does after the meds and probiotics...since it appears to be sinus/eye related it may need to be treated with the Erythromycin. If you use the same antibiotic to much the bacteria can become resistant to it. Hopefully he will recover and not need further meds.

I got a call back from ladygouldianfinch.com! Yay! =D> After talking to her about different medicines for what ailment he might have, she is sending me Amoxitex. Should be here by Thursday ( [-o< I hope [-o< ). Right now he's sitting under the heat lamp. I'll bet it feels good on his aching head. She also suggested I separate him if the hen wasn't sick because it's not good to medicate a healthy bird. I hate to do it but I'll bring him upstairs while I medicate him. If she lays eggs while he's gone there isn't anything I can do. I'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Thanks everyone for all the advice.

Trish, most likely if she lays eggs she will continue to incubate them herself. In the meantime hope he gets well!

After this morning he's gone into the nest box and hasn't come out for nearly 2 hours. I'm worried he won't be able to hang on until the medicine gets here. Two more days. Especially if he's not eating and drinking like he should be. I'm angry with the avian vet in our area. And I certainly will partially blame him if I lose Jem. It would have cost me between $400.00 and $500.00 to take him to the vet for an exam and then tests and medicine. They refused to even talk to me about purchasing medicine from them. The office visit alone was going to be nearly $300.00. My husband and I are retired and can't afford that. Sorry about venting but I'm angry (maybe more than I initially thought) that Vets are no longer thinking about the animal, but about the money. I'm angry that I can order correct medicine on the internet without an exam but I can't get it from a Vet and to me that is shameful.

So right now he is on nothing? What did she say about the Erythromycin? Do you have that on hand? I would if it were me start him on it instead of waiting. The more time goes on the more bacteria is taking over, the sinus are so close to the brain.

Did you also have amoxicillian?

She told me they wouldn't do any good but I am keeping him on them anyway. A little is better than nothing. I have him on the broad spectrum
Erythromycin until the Imoxitex gets here. It's for the treatment of respiratory problems so I'm hoping it will give him some relief.

I put one in yesterday and I think it's helped. I have millet where he can easily reach it and several bowls of seed along with the feeder. Thanks for your support Cindy. There are no finch people around me.

THE MEDICINE CAME TODAY! I am so relieved. I kept him on the Erythromycin while I waited and I think it kept him from dying. I was so worried. He had a couple of bad days where he slept almost all day and didn't eat much then started tail bobbing. I thought for sure I was going to lose him but the next day he was much better and stayed that way. Now that I have the Amoxitex I'm hoping he'll recover after the 5 day treatment. In the mean time, the hen Jewel has laid 3 eggs!!! Just in case she abandons the nest I have the Societies all revved up and ready to sit. Hopefully that won't happen. I want her to raise her own babies.
I read that if you have a bird with a sinus infection you shouldn't use them as breeders ever again. Is this true?

I am glad he is showing improvement, hope he continues to do well. As far as using him as a breeder again, wonder why the article said not to use him as a breeder...once the infecion is clear wouldn't you think it was alright to. I would email Laraine that question.

Hi Trish,

I would strongly suggest joining the yahoo group Gouldian Keeper or even NFSS - there is a wealth of information from either groups. If you are not a member of the NFSS the Gouldian Keeper has a really great group as well. Laraine is a member and she usually answers very quickly.

I hope his little system can handle being put thru two different heavy meds back to back. I've never had any success using Amoxitex at the straight dose - it doesn't seem to phase the problem.

One eye colds are usually a sign of Ornithosis and this in itself is the reason you wouldn't want to breed this male but Ornithosis can be treated with Doxycycline. See link below:

http://ladygouldian.com/content/water-s ... aged-birds

It is thought that once the male shows this type of condition he will always be susceptible, and the stress of breeding is compromising his system, which is most likely why he got this eye cold.

I hope he gets better soon [-o<

Thank you for answering the question Misty...interesting. Trish, did Lariane mention the Doxycycline? Most the time a Broad spectrum antibiotic like tylosin is recommended, I was surprised with the amoxitex.
