I don't think this was caused by calcium deficiency. I have 3 more finches -including the male Cordon- and I've never had a problem. I almost always put Vitamin in their water but I know it's not the best thing in the world. I give them egg shells every now and then and some greens. Only thing I can't give them is sun light. I'm thinking the bird might have flown into something in the cage although it's been in this big cage for close to 3 years.
I'll take a couple of pics soon and post them since posting isn't the headache it used to be.
Really like to see the pic-I have a mate who has this problem with a cockateil so I will check with him what he is doing for his bird

To compensate for sunlight (my birds are indoors too) they get the Calcium Plus liquid in the water once a week. The "plus" means it has vitamin d3 added. It might not be as good as sunlight but better than nothing. They also have eggshells and cuttlebone available at all times.
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

Hi. I took a couple of pics of the finch with the broken beak but couldn't upload them here because it said the file is too big. I don't know what to do to make it smaller. The software that came with the camera doesn't include something to edit the size of a pic.

if you save it to a file it should allow you to reduce the resolution under "resize". Drop it to 400-500. Hopefully that will work

I had a Spice finch who cracked her beak and I put Quick Gel on it and the next day, it was apparently healed. I know that is not as serious as your finches beak, but Quick Gel also can be used as a supplemental feeding for sick or injured birds. I agree with Cindy that you should put fresh, shredded eggs in a dish. I mix my hard boiled eggs with some handfeeding powder for the vitamins etc. That way, she can eat and get her nutrition where it should be to heal the beak. Keep us posted.

Thanks, Kenny. I used Windows "paint" to resize the pics and hopefully it'll work.
Unfortunately the beak looks messed up. It's not the beautiful smooth and bright red it used to be. It's kind orange now, although this discoloration has been going on for a while but it looks much worse now. As I mentioned, the lower beak is missing a very small part at the tip even though it looks worse in the pic. It's the upper beak that's missing about 1/3. I'm wondering if there's something that's causing this discoloration and roughness in the surface of the beak. The bird is still doing fine and acting normal and she's active as ever. Only thing I think both the female and the male have been going thru a molt that's taking forever.

Finchmix, they dont really care much for boiled eggs. I've tried before. They're more interested in the shell.

I think the best you can do now is to make sure he has plenty of calcium(egg shells-cuttle bone and maybe a supplement) and good food.
Once his health improves his beak will too.

Poor thing! I hope he will be better soon!

How did you feed the hardboiled eggs? I put the egg in a small chopper and mix some corn meal in, so it's not mushy but like little crumbles. Al of my birds like that, including the CBs.
