Don't beat yourself up too much, Dolly, about not asking enough questions at a mart, I still forget to ask all the questions I should sometimes. I see, I want. And there are all kinds of brokers, too. There are brokers that I would purchase from without a second's thought, there are others I wouldn't go near. And we don't all have the same experience even with the same broker. A broker I do not trust may be one you are comfortable with, it all depends on our individual experiences.

Marts are always stressful on the birds. I love marts, and that is how I sell most of my birds, but it is hard on them. I have had birds puff up on me at the mart, and so I take them home, but I wonder if any I have sold have gotten sick after I sold them. I have no idea, I've not heard, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I'm not trying to defend someone I haven't even seen, just trying to give another perspective. This could be someone with no ethics, or this could be just another seller who thought he was selling perfectly healthy birds. As far as refunds, every seller handles it differently. Some do no refunds, some want to work with the customer to make them happy. Many sellers are reluctant to give outright refunds without a bit of proof. It is a complicated issue.

Sally ... thanks, you made me feel a TINY bit better. I really felt so stupid for not being a more serious shopper. I love to go to marts as it's a great place to buy food, accessories, cages (and of course birds). I'm starting to know some of the sellers; most seem really nice & helpful. I've only sold 4 birds so far; all to people I met at a mart & they came to my home to see the birds. I think it's a good way for them to see how I care for my birds, and to me that goes a long way for them to see I try to keep them healthy. I take good care of my birds, feed them a great variety of good stuff, keep their cages tip top; .......... I just enjoy them. :-BD

That really is good news. Now, if Bill has other birds, this new one should really be quarantined away from any other birds. That is just a precaution all of us should take. A quarantine should last for an absolute minimum of 2-3 weeks.

Dolly and Bill,
I'm sorry you've had such an early loss of a new finch and a bad experience as a result. You can contact ladygouldianfinch.com and see if they can express Iverlux for the finches. I've used that for ASM preventative etc. and it is safe with most finches. Have you checked the other finches breathing? Do you hear a clicking sound? Are they fluffed or not active? Those are signs something is wrong. If they seem fine, maybe the one finch was overstressed as Cindy mentioned. Keep an eye on your new finches and put them through the quarantine for about 30 days. I quarantine new finches and treat with Iverlux for two days, then filtered water for a couple days, then Coccicare for 7 days, filtered water for a couple days, Ronex 12% for s7 days, filtered water for 3-5 days, and then, the Iverlux again for two days. So far, this seems to have kept all new birds healthy and they've not been sick, nor have my other finches gotten sick (ones that share the cage with the bird after quarantine).
