Ameza, I literally had him show me the finches (as well as my other animals) via FaceTime every single day I was gone--so thanks again for the suggestion! But I am just so proud of him for taking excellent care of all four of my little winged creatures :).
Great news! Good job hubby too! Don't you just love technology? Facetiming with your pets!!! :)) LOVE IT

Sorry to be a downer, but I once went away for a week and left my boyfriend (who lives with me) in charge of the animals. When I got home one of my finches and my tree frog were both dead. :( He meant well, but since he doesn't normally watch them or care for them, he had no idea what was normal behavior. And since he didn't pay attention to them while I was gone, except to feed them, he had no idea what either of the animals was doing/how they were acting before it died, he just found them dead. So I'll never know what happened. I know he was really upset about it, he didn't TRY to kill them, but I will be very nervous if I ever have to leave him in charge again. :(

I just read this topic :) I am like you.. I don't quite trust (wrong word) my husband with my animals. I am the one that also feeds HIS snake so I dont even know if he can do that! When I was hospitalized for having shingles when I was pregnant I told him to don't forget about the cat and my tiel!
Well I came home 3 days later to see my litter box OVER FLOWING with pee, no poops (he gags at the sight of poop). I asked him WHY there werent any poops but LOTS OF PEE!

....
"how do I take the pee out?"
#-o they are in CLUMPS, can somehow manage the poop (covering his mouth with the neck of his tshirt) but can't figure out the pee.. good grief! that and the pregnancy hormones did NOT mix very well.

It was very brave of you to leave your babies behind, I know the feeling!! "DONT LET THE CAT OUT!" - to all his friends that come by!

My husband is surprisingly good at taking care of my four legged creatures--even my cats, and he hates them. Mainly because he is seriously allergic to them (I got them long before he came into the picture, and we were a package deal when he married me!). I have had to to Europe for several weeks on multiple occasions, and he was left in charge of the dog and both the cats. Not only did he dutifully and regularly empty the litter box and feed/water them, but he would also pet them with a stick (he tries to avoid touching them in general). He is much better with the dog, who is practically his dog, as well (even if he won't admit it!). So I am fairly confident (especially after my initial "test" trip) that he will do his best to care for my birds. Despite all of his blustering about my animals, he is really a softie ;). There's an animal lover in there somewhere, I know it!

LOL imagining someone petting a cat with a stick!! That's a great mental image, I'm seriously cracking up!!!

My boyfriend kept the dog alive lol and the fish. He likes the animals, he's obsessed with the dog, hes just not into the little ones like I am, so he doesn't spend his time staring at them and worrying over them. I don't know if anything could have been done to save the finch and frog, but if I was home, I probably would have noticed something was wrong and then at least I would know what happened to them, you know?

henrietta, yeah, I know what you mean. I suspect that my husband came into my office to feed/check on the birds only once per day (or twice, if I made him show them to me on FaceTime). I was just lucky that there were no issues while I was gone.

Just to clarify, it was one of those sticks people stir paint with (one that hadn't been used, of course)...not like a stick from outside. Although I don't suppose that makes it much better! haha. At least it was clean. They seemed to like it.
