Windex is almost all water. I wouldn't hang my hat on it doing any good as a Tb disinfectant.

Why not use some 70% alcohol? Denatured alcohol by the gallon is cheaper than Windex.
Test it on one of the plastic dishes and then run them through the dishwasher just because. And sunlight is free.

Liquor and alcohol based cosmetics etc are sometimes stored in plastic bottles of some sort so alcohol can't be all that corrosive. I would expect that you'd need a much higher grade of solvent to damage plastic.

over time a high percentage would damage plastic but if you are just washing it off and then rinsing and drying you will be fine even if you use 99.9%... what residue remains will simply evaporate... you would have to keep it immersed for days to cause any damage...

However placing rusty metal in Coca-Cola for a few hours will at first remove all the rust and then over time slowly dissolve the metal... and we drink that? ;) lol

Dishwasher is bleach-based. I would clean all small parts in the alcohol.

No no no no no......If you go to your local supermarket or Walgreens or CVS, and buy 8 little one pint bottles which is a total of one gallon, they cost (I just checked) about $2 each, for a total of $16. That is for 70%, which will do the job. The 90% will cost about 50 cents more per bottle.

Or, search "isopropyl alcohol" and click on the ads that come up in the listing first. Be sure to check whether they include shipping charges in the price, some do, some don't.

70% will do the job, and is cheaper. Also, you don't need electronics grade, that is super-ultra clean (filtered out all dust particles). Regular USP household grade will do.

One comment I saw on a listing makes a very good point. When shipping hazardous materials (and alcohol is, it's flammable and most are poisonous), the larger the container, the more shipping will cost because the hazard increases, and so you get surcharges included in the shipping. Ordering a whole bunch of little bottles won't cost you extra in hazardous shipping charges. Ordering one large bottle will. (Thinking is, if a bottle springs a leak, a little bottle does less damage, less likely all the little bottles would leak vs one big one.)

Cheapest will probably be to go down to the local store and buy them out. Might work to ask if they have an unopened case box in the back that they could just sell you rather than taking all the little bottles off the shelf.

Gee, price of IPA has gone up quite a bit in the last 11 years. If I still worked at the place, I probably could have gotten you a 5 gallon bucket for free, guys would have put it right in my car for me.

OK...YOU GUYS ROCK!!! I am going to use the cleaner I purchased for the walls, floors, and cages. It will not damage any of those things. I will use the 70% alcohol from the store to soak the feeders, water tubes and baths. Do you think I can get a few pairs of new birds Oct 5th if my flock was euthanized oh July 10th??? Be honest...

Honestly, I'd ask the vet.

The correct medical answer for that question is "GOK". [=God only knows].

Sally
I did ask her...she said 3 months to play it really safe, but 10/5 is 5 days shy of 3 months...and typically I am on over-do'er when it comes to health stuff. My gut tells me to wait till mid October, but the bird mart that Martie will be at is on 10/5 #-o . It is 7 hours away and we will be heading up the night before to stay at a hotel. Unless, I get them from Martie on Oct 5th and wait to put them in the bird room till the full 3 month quarantine period is up??? That would work, as the vet is only concerned about the room and items the birds came into direct contact with. The cage they will be going into was never used and has never been in my bird room.

Sally, would you possibly consider shipping me a pair of RCCB's in the Fall? Maybe your friend in Texas that breeds Stars would ship a pair to me too...possibly with the RBBS's so I only have to pay for the airfare one time...Is this even possible??? Forgive me for being so blunt...

Ginene:
I'm not about to advise you but know what I'd do.

If that bird mart is my only option with nothing for many month after that I'd go for it. Five days is close to an arbitrary deadline. Maybe there is some hard data on the 'don't buy' time but I doubt it.

You live in the NY metro area so surely there must be local reputable sources of new stock. North Jersey? Westchester? Would that not be just as good -with less travel?
Even Philly is practically next door to you by our standards. Other than Tucson the closest big city to PHX is San Diego.

My first finch purchase was on thefinchforum.com. It went very well, but it was just zebras and societies (generally hardy birds). My owls, Goulds, green singers and RCCB male came from a guy in my neighborhood. His birds are healthy and beautiful, and his bird room/aviary is immaculate. My only issue with buying from him again, is that his son told me that its safe to breed mother/son and father/daughter. His dad breeds the Goulds and he breeds the other species, in the bird room at the dads house. I didn't know this then, but since being on the forum I learned this type of breeding is not ok. The only problem I ever had with their birds, was my Gould hen Bella...stargazing and died out of nowhere. The other 6 were perfectly healthy, happy and beautiful. As for other local breeders that I can trust, I don't know of any...except Debbie of coarse :) . But I am not getting Goulds this time around. I wonder if she sells other birds that she breeds? I can also ask if she know any local breeders that she would recommend. Martie is about 6 hours away...not local, but not too bad. I am going to ask if she would allow me to come to her aviary to purchase birds. That way I wont have to breech the 3 month quarantine at all. She may even know someone near her who has RCCB's and Stars. Anyway, the Avian Vet did say to go for young birds...I guess the younger they are, the less chance they have of being exposed to illness. She also said to go with small breeders...not bird brokers.

Hygiene and inbreeding are concerns. Possibly equal to the indiscriminate colony breeding at the big guys' mills.
Pet shops are a crap shoot in all directions. Fortunately that works OK most of the time.

If you have a local source where there is some concern about the risk of inbreeding you could always buy only males [or females] there and look for the opposite sex elsewhere. Maybe a good idea for genetic diversity no matter what.

Maybe look at craigslist and put an ad in to see what shows up? Or look for a bird club in the tristate area?

You have time to explore. Good luck
