chirpy oh boy!! Watch out!! Lol.. my little cousin used to be obsessed with Power Rangers when he was young. It was his absolute favorite thing on the planet. When he was around three years old he was throwing a tantrum over something my aunt said no about and he decided he was going to attempt karate on her just like the Power Rangers!! LOL!! Well let's just say no more Power Rangers.. and karate chopping my aunt definitely didn't defeat the bad guy!!

Does anyone know the safety using dryer sheets in the laundry room with birds? I had debated using my basement as a quarantine space, but our dryer does not ventilate outdoors and thought it would kill the birds.

Do you have to use dryer sheets? I do use them (twice per sheet) because my dryer does ventilate outside. I've heard though that a crumpled up ball of aluminum foil or a cloth soaked (then rung out) with vinegar has the same effect. May want to give it a try. Bob

If you have them glue and heat the carpet you can ask for a water base glue low VOC....the heated machine they use to bond the carpeting, I would ask if that is Teflon coated. Ask also f the carpeting can be unwrapped and aired out a few days before installation.

http://www.birdchannel.com/bird-housing ... afely.aspx

From Land of Vos
"* If you must install new carpet in your home, remove all parrots and other pets to an area that does not share the same air system, preferably to a different location altogether, during the installation.
* Ask the installer to air out new carpet before installation, or it can be rolled out (perhaps in a warehouse) and allowed to outgas before being brought indoors. Ideally, we need to wait until the new carpet smell can no longer be detected, but that may be impractical as it can take as long as several months, depending on the chemicals in the carpet. Even a few days of airing out helps.
* If the carpet can be tacked down rather than glued, the problem of toxins from adhesives is avoided.
* After it is installed, keep windows open and fans running for two or three days.
* Make sure that the installer uses safe adhesives to seal the seams.
* Vacuum carpet frequently and deep clean annually.
* Use a HEPA vacuum cleaner, which has an ultrafine filter that traps tiny dust particles or a vacuum cleaner with special water filters. The cleanest system is a central vacuum with an outdoor exhaust."

I did a search for this, and most of what I found said the dryer sheets are not safe. Keep in mind that the sites I found were mostly 'green' websites, which are totally against anything with chemicals. My laundry room is just feet away from my dining room (where I have some birds cages), and I use dryer sheets, but the dryer is vented to the outside. Here is one artcile I found:

cindy thank you! Do you know how long it takes for them to be out of the basement. I really have no other option.
My BIL is the one doing this. He sadly doesn't care much about the animals and he will just laugh at me. This whole process is very stressful for me. I just hope the basement is ok.. I know many have birds in their basement but I don't know OUR one is up to par. Thankfully there's no mold or anything like this but I don't trust this house with all the stuff that breaks down :( its a beautiful newer house but his ex wife never took care of it so its been downhill for us.

Don't tell your bil that the special requests for low VOC glue and all are for your birds, tell him they are for YOU and YOUR DAUGHTER, his brother's daughter, his adorable niece? You have mentioned that you have asthma, and she's just a tiny kid, those fumes are not good for either of you. Even tho he's your BIL, as your landlord, if he sends you to the hospital, he's responsible. And, as your BIL, he should feel even worse if he does. Ask hubby to step up and tell him this, too, if you get sick, who takes care of your daughter? How does he keep concentrating on both his job and his schooling? He cannot afford to have you get sick, and he needs to make that clear to his brother.

On the dryer sheets--a few rounds without dryer sheets will not make that much difference to your laundry. Residual stuff stays in the clothes anyway. I used to use liquid softener in the wash, as that I could get without perfumes. We have such hard water, it was still affecting the clothes. So I started added a cup or twp of plain old very inexpensive vinegar to the wash. And was able to drop the softener. A little vinegar in the wash won't hurt the birds, and it's a heckuva lot cheaper than liquid or dryer sheets.

I will be moving mine to the basement sometime this spring while I redo the upstairs carpet and kitchen. It comes some natural light but I'll add a grow bulb to help and I'll also add egg food and vitamin supplement to help as well. I"m sure your guys will do just fine.

Nerien do you know if the low VOC is more expensive..? He is tight on money too... I try and not deal with his brother, he's nice but I don't talk abou the house with him. He has the audacity to bump up the rent when he used too much $ on Christmas. I was so angry.. Anyway.. Ill see if I can talk to him about it through Jason, his current wife has athsma so maybe that'll help.. :(

@Angela&Shalamar you're on the same boat! The windows are tiny I went down there earlier there's not much light well I guess its basement so there isn't much light anyway.. I hope its only a couple of days 4-5 max!

NO
Keep the birds downstairs for a week.
You want as much of the new carpet smell/vapors to be aired out of the house as you can before you bring the birds back up.
Better safe than sorry.

Just use a daylight florescent bulb on a timer and the birds will be fine. Mine have some window light but mostly get the light from the bulb.
