Re: Angry/disappointed/frustrated/down right furious!!!!!!
The brother is 27 yrs old so yeah technically an adult. We ran into him this morning and I walked away while hubby talked to him. I'm not ready to speak to him civilly yet so I think it's best I don't speak to him at all.
No signs of infection in the foot. Fingers crossed it stays that way. I'm
Keeping her regardless now so I've decided to call her Achilles unless anyone has another good idea. Hubby says I should call her Ahab. Lol

Happy to hear good news, that they are improving! I prayed your birds would get better. Yes, if she only doesn't get an infection and her little foot falls off she will be just fine!

Hi Heidi.
When you mentioned that you ran into Bro, I was wondering if you were in a vehicle...
If it was mine, he'd be running in the opposite direction if he saw me coming, vehicle or not.
As in: You don't hurt the people or creatures that I love, or you will pay one way or the other.
By the way I like Achilles, but I'd make it more feminine somehow. Do birds have heels??? Or you could name her I-hop

Haha I kinda like I-hop to. That's what I thought about Achilles because it's a male name but I can't figure out how to make it more feminine.
All my birds are named after Olympic gods or creatures except one of my males that my son wanted to name patches and one of my fawn juveniles that I'm keeping because he wants to call him chaps. lol

Oh and I forgot to mention but I just checked on her. The foot has definitely died as it's turning dark brown and she's putting weight on it so I suspect it doesn't hurt anymore.

Re: Angry/disappointed/frustrated/down right furious!!!!!!
That's wonderful news that she's still alive!!
I said a prayer for her; I bet lots of others did too!
And good news on the foot. (Feels odd to say that, but at least she's not in pain.)
I've always wondered about this feet-falling-off thing. I've only ever heard of it happening. So I'm curious to hear about how it progresses and how long it takes and so forth. I imagine in addition to the color it would probably be cold too.
Do you need to give her antibiotics as a preventative measure? I imagine gangrene or similar would be a risk. But I'd have no idea what antibiotic would be best.
I hope she has the strength to fight! This would be hard to survive while healthy; such a shame that her body is strained now due to wonder boy's carelessness.
I love iHop!
Is there a female god who's known for strength or bravery or resilience?

Re: Angry/disappointed/frustrated/down right furious!!!!!!
Ugh! Just cleaned all my cages and I lost five babies as well. One was partially hatched and the others were dead in shell/ probably almost ready to hatch. They were from my Eumo pair which makes me sad.
I'm leaning towards IHOP. Hubby likes it to.
Mia I'd have no idea what to give her for antibiotics as preventative.
I gave all my guys some kelp and pea shoots today. They went nuts. LOL.

Re: Angry/disappointed/frustrated/down right furious!!!!!!
Olympic_Aiairies - Oh no on the Eumo babies!
What a disappointment. Though perhaps it was for the best. Maybe it's better to die in shell vs. dying of starvation. I don't know. Both scenarios just plain suck because it shouldn't have happened.
How are the other 4 chickies? Are they doing well?
And how's little iHop?
I have no idea on what antibiotic you'd give for gangrene or similar, so I did research!
I looked it up and it seems there are a couple different types: wet and dry:
http://www.emedicinehealth.com/gangrene/article_em.htm
I found this article on gangrene in birds. The specific bacteria mentioned in connection with gangrene/necrosis is an anaerobic bacteria (grows without air) called clostridium perfringens:
http://www.avianbiotech.com/diseases/clostridium.htm
It mentions a few different antibiotics:
"Antitoxins provide quick relief, Guanidine, Zinc bacitracin, penicillin, tetracycline's are used to treat infections."
Penicillin and tetracycline. That's super common.
I found avian penicillin here:
http://www.allbirdproducts.com/newprodu ... illin.html
I've ordered from them before and they're great. I think you could have them overnight it.
If you happen to have any penicillin on-hand, I'd crush up a pill and work out the dosage and crop feed it.

Re: Angry/disappointed/frustrated/down right furious!!!!!!
Mia I was really upset about the Eumo babies but in glad that the parents abandoned the rather than starve themselves. Eumos are very hard to find in my area and they cost my a 100 each. The worst was to find the half hatched shell. That was hard to see.
The four chicks are still alive. I'm just waiting to start hearing noises from them.
Thank you for all the research!!!! I was going to do some myself tonight but you've saved me a bunch of time. She's still doing well and has actually started perching on the perch instead of sleeping in the open nest. I'm taking that as a good sign. I'm going to read your links on my lunch break today.

Olympic_Aiairies - Glad I could help.
FYI, average finch weight is 15 grams if that helps with dosing.
We're rooting for the little girl! I'm happy to hear she's perching. That's great news!! It sounds like she's starting to feel better. Thank goodness! Hoping for lots more progress in the right direction!

Also order a big batch of spray millet and leave that in the flight for them as back up seed the next time you leave, try leaving some dried egg food like Higgins down in a bowl for them also, I add dried parsley to the dried egg food since I can't be there to give them chopped greens.

Re: Angry/disappointed/frustrated/down right furious!!!!!!
I just had another thought: One of the antibiotics that is said to work on gangrene/necrosis-related infections is zinc bacitracin.
You can actually get this over-the-counter in ointment/cream form.
This could work in a pinch.
Ointment or cream, obviously, isn't ideal. But in cases where you don't have another option, you can apply liberally and cover with a bandage and it will be absorbed through the skin.
My uncle - a doctor - did this one time when he was hiking and he got a cut that got very badly infected and he started getting fever and red streaks leading away from the wound that indicate blood poisoning. It took him a day and a half to get back to his car, so he slathered antibiotic ointment on his arm and covered it and it worked! It didn't heal it up entirely, but it prevented the rapid decline that he was seeing.
I imagine the same could be done with a bird. Slather zinc bacitracin cream or ointment onto the upper (live) portion of the leg. Cover with vet wrap (they sell this for humans. It's marketed as "self adhering bandage.")
That could work nicely to stave off infection if you need to wait for oral antibiotics to arrive in the post.
