Yep by the dismal swamp. I'm far south, not northern VA.

Ahhh, I see.
We just bought a place in west Virginia,5 miles from Virginia border. Haven't noticed it being much more humid then Jersey. Hope to retire there in a couple years.

You have chosen a beautiful place. Much of my childhood spent in West VA, in those forests. Parents were die-hard campers. And the people there are wonderful folk. They will give you the shirts off their backs.

They grow too much cabbage, they will leave the extra on your doorstep. You wont even know who did it half the time. Humble folk.

Where I live its sea level and humid. High concentration of copperhead and moccasin snake out here. So it gives you an idea of the humidity. Rarely snows here. Sticky in the summer and rainy in the winter.

**edit* Pack your snake kits. You got diamond-back in those hills. But the wildlife will take your breath away, for sure.

Dismal swamp? Poisonous snakes? Yikes !!! I'd have to have someone carry me around piggyback.

Can't you all plant some eucalyptus trees to soak up the swamp and grow some mongooses (mongoosies, mongoosiy ?)

As to being an overprotective Mama..... :-). Were you not a wee child yourself at the time?

House is coming along great.
Already found 3 copperheads and many non poisonous snakes. Almost grabbed a black widow spider one weekend. :D
Neighbors are wonderful just as you describe and you can't go anywhere where people don't want to chat like they have been your best friend for years.
The wildlife abounds and my game cameras along our hiking trail are busy snapping pictures. It's our little bit of heaven, 5 acres on a mountain top in a log home. <3

Dumb question; why do captive birds need to eat boiled eggs? They would not eat eggs normally right? Just wondering.

You are living my dream, but Im about 20 years away from retirement. One day I might be your neighbor. I'll leave butternut on your doorstep and tip toe away. ;)

You will never tire of the beauty and the numerous skinks and newts you can catch and admire that rustle under the leaves on the forest floor.

I snorted when you put a smiley-face beside "Almost grabbed a black widow spider one weekend." hahaha Yep we got those too. Theyll hang out in your woodpiles up there mostly, so wear good gloves when fetching wood.

BTW I stand corrected, You guys have timber rattlesnakes in those hills.

Im in a suburban area, which used to be farmland when I was a young girl. As the crow flies about 30 miles we have a large old swamp, and it has the highest concentration of snakes in the east coast. Some of them are GORGEOUS.

Spreckles
I think it would the same nutrients they would get while in their embryonic state (in the egg), so I think this gives them the same boost they get while forming.

I would not be surprised if early woman ate the placenta after a child was born. :YMSICK:

That's what I hear, can't wait to find one.
Can't believe how many owls we have, most nights you can hear ... "who cooks for you, who cooks for you" calls of the barred owl.
I've also finally get to see pileated woodpeckers. They come every morning for their suet fix. I've never seen such huge woodpeckers before.

Hard boiled eggs are good for many nutrients and animal protein that they can't get from seed and veggies. Birds have been known to eat their own eggs if they are lacking nutrients.

Eggs will supply your bird with vitamin D3 which they need to absorb calcium that they would normally get from the sun. Other things are protein, vitamin A, Vitamin K, Thiamin, Riboflavin (B2), Pyridoxine (B6), Pantothenic acid, Biotin, Folic acid, Vitamin B12, Choline, Phosphorus, Sodium, Chlorine, Iodine and Selenium.

The egg shell, which you should also be giving them will give them Calcium, Manganese and Iron.

Yep the woodpeckers are huge and LOUD!! Oh no......you're like me. I used to catch blacksnakes, cornsnakes and garters and hide them under a pot on the picnic table on campsite for my mom and watch her scramble.

Dad loved that ;)

When you hear a rattler, Im warning ya......freeze solid til you find out where the sound is definitely coming from. They dont rattle until you are right up on them.

You're an adventurist one!

I actually like rattle snakes better, they warn you. We've come across them many times hiking in Jersey. The copperhead lash out quietly, now that's something to watch out for.
