I had to euthanize my poor finch!

Before I write any more, I'm in no way criticizing the method used. I had just never heard (or thought) of using helium or other inert gas. The AVMA has an article about humane methods of euthanasia (http://www.avma.org/issues/animal_welfa ... anasia.pdf) and CO2 is mentioned but helium isn't. And as I've mentioned (ad nauseam) I come from a reptile background and rodents as feeders are routinely euthanized with CO2. I did do a little research and it appears helium is a painless and useful method. Unfortunately I found most of that info from googling sites describing methods of suicide.

I've never looked for helium but I'm sure it's easy enough to find at any party store. CO2 is found at aquarium shops and fire prevention shops. Perhaps helium is easier to find. Party shops are everywhere.

Anyway, I completely understand using what's available in a pinch and a helium balloon is a great idea, especially for a one time use. Vinegar and baking soda also make CO2 and can be used in a pinch as well.

I've never had to euthanize a small animal and I don't think I could so I commend you for your quick thought and research beforehand that let you know the right thing to do at the time.

I have never had to euthanize any of my birds, but this is good knowledge to have, especially the vinegar and baking soda. Sorry for you loss Anita, and great quick thinking on your part.
