Hi had this go through one of my avairies 2 years ago, lucky for me a we have a specialist bird vet in Hawke's Bay thankfully she diagnosied it when another vet told me it was worms. certainly was not worms they had been wormed before breeding. what was worse we lost our first nesting of cordons then there parents, all because the first vet got it wrong. thank goodness we found Lynda.

I use it instead of soft feed for conditioning my birds for breeding. this is the first year and I have to say its looking to be 1 of the best yet. I used to mince it up finely to start with but now my birds are ok with it as a course crumble.
I add it to cooked egg, rice bran oil, bran and rolled oats. set this out fresh with sprouted seeds everyday and the birds love it. I have had no problems with failer to thrive which effects Norwich canaries terrible. so far all my birds that have fledged are looking very well and large. it has high amounts of protein which the finches seem to need. its really worth trying i think my breeding results speak for themselves. 3 pairs of my parrot finches are on their second fledgings same with my canaries, I am waiting on certain gouldians but they tend to nest later in the season, while my early gouldians look to be wanting to sit again.
hope this helps :P

Dare I say my birds look a bit perkier after two days of medication.

I managed to find meds. One for Protozoa, another for cocci (as Nixity pointed out THanks) and an avian disinfectant (Virukill) at the large petshop about an hours drive from where I live. They specialize in racing pigeons and birds and had a wider variety of things. I landed up buying products using the Active ingredients from products you guys recommended.
So far so good. I have them now on a course for 6 days for the Protozoa infection (which yes everyone first off said deworm), I am going to follow this up with a 3-5 day treatment for cocci and then give them probiotics & extra vitamin. Is Ronivet / cocci treatment considered antibiotic? Can I add the probiotic/vit with the meds or is this unadvisable? Did not want to mix too much at once, but want my birds to get better ASAP.
I am also treating my wild birds water at the same time to prevent reinfection from outside birds. I am pretty sure my regular wild rock doves also have this disease. They get the left overs from my aviary on a daily basis.

I gave my aviary a disinfecting treatment yesterday. GOSH took me the whole day. One thing about a planted aviary is that you cannot just wash it down! Luckily my birds were all just finished laying clutches, so I threw out all the eggs and cleaned nest etc. EVERYthing was disinfected, except the birds of course! LOL they may not have taken to me giving them a bath.

So now I am [-o< they get better and once meds are done give a follow up treatment at the correct date, after which they can again breed to their hearts content.

No, it would be considered an anti-protozoal, but offering probiotics regularly will not hurt them either way, so you can still administer them afterwards, you just don't have to do so in terms of trying to prevent a yeast infection.

Those are mainly an issue with antibiotic treatment.
I would not mix the probiotics directly with the meds, but if you wanted to offer them simultaneously you could do so by sprinkling onto soft food, veggies or sprouts.

I'm happy to hear the birds are feeling and looking better. =D>

I once ordered products from a company in Africa and if I could find the information I would post it for you. They have pretty much everything you are looking for in one store.

YIp that is the company I got my meds from! I just did not want to wait for delivery.

I went to a store that stocked them with a knowledgable person to talk too. When I looked online, I just got this list of products and without knowing what to order, I was a bit unsure if I had the correct symptoms etc. As it is this store offered me great service and found me all the things I need. From now on I will be able to order from them.

Thanks for the info again! I will sprinkle the probiotics over their food.

I just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to all those on the Finch Forum that gave me advice. You have all really helped me through this learning curve of disease.
Without many other finch fanciers close by I found your recommendations invaluable.

My aviary is full of life again. The finches seem almost back to their old selves.
1st treatment is complete and in two days I continue with the rest of the treatments.

If my finches could talk I know they would give thanks for helping me find the right meds to treat them. You all gave me a base to start looking for the right stuff to get them through sharing your experience / knowledge.

Thanks

Monotwine, that is such good news. It sounds like everyone is on the mend. Hope it continues to go well and all your finches are back to doing what finches do best! :)

And the best thing is to find a really good bird supply store, so you can get whatever meds you may need in the future, and with knowledgeable staff to help you.
