Thanks Cindy, Candace and everyone! These newbies are flying pigs (with feathers). They are eating me out of house and home - I'm surprised at how much seed (& water) they are going through already.

I've Scatted each of them and gave them 24 hours of Worm Away water, trimmed their nails as needed and leave them alone in my bathroom (with the radio on low).

I bought a pair on Saturday along with a juvie and then went back on Tuesday for 4 more juvies. The price was right and they are certainly keeping each other company. =D>

BTW - a couple of them have registered AACC 2009 bands on them with the breeders initials (whom I located through Kijiji). I asked him how old the birds were (what month they hatched) and if he knew the parents background/colours. All he would say is that they are a year old "due to the 09 band" and that he couldn't say what the parents were. I know another breeder that bands like this and also does not keep any information about the birds. This totally blows me away! Why would any breeder go to the trouble of close-banding birds and not keep any info about them?!?!?!?! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I think I just hijacked my own thread.

Liz...they are probably just enjoying being spoiled right now, lots of good food and care. Can't wait to see pictures when they settle in.

Liz,
Since you hijacked, I'll comment. I have noticed closed banded birds before and the breeder did not keep records or furnish much information. They told me they banded the birds just to prove the age. Sounds like this may be the case with your breeder.
We get so caught up in the care and breeding for bigger, healthier birds... dreaming about the next mutation we want to work with and forget that there are many that breed for for just plain income.
Usually these birds will sell because you know you are buying a young birds and like you said... the price is right. So many people with the knowledge will be able to set them up with other of their birds and figure out within a few clutches what is in the backgrounds. I have some new ones in quarentine..... Some I have records on some I don't. I will pair with some that I have bred (which I do have the records on  ) I will be able to predict some but I am sure to have a few surprizes. As I am sure you will have a few surprizes too :D

By the way, what colors are your girls? From the pics all I can see is feet :D

Thanks Candace - that actually makes sense.

They are all "plain Jane greens" with purple breasts. Some are BH and others RH.

WhoYou never know...my plain Janes turned out to be /blue... and had such lovely chicks :D
I think my favorite color of gouldian is still the YH, RH, and BH normals.

I agree. The normals are the most beautiful. =D>

This was like a premonition.
I was looking at one of the zebra hen cages and saw blood on the perch :( DANG IT !!!!
One of the hens had an abbrasion on the bottom of her foot. And I just cleaned the cage perches & floor grate a few days before. I am getting frustrated figuring out what is damaging their feet. I cleaned the blood off her foot and put some neosporin on her foot.

On top of that another hen has a bleeding sore on the shoulder of her right wing. It looks like a small circular wound. I noticed it when I saw her pecking at it. I cleaned the wound and put some neosporin on it. I don't know how that happened. Was something there irritating her or is it from another hen pecking at her? I don't know. :(

Both hens are in a small hospital cage so I can keep a better eye on them and catch them for inspection and medication on their wounds.

Have you gone over every bar on the cage to see if there is a metal spur? Must be something that is cutting them. How strange... If it was birds fighting you would see tham..also not likely to bite the bottom of a foot. :?

The bird was in that condition when I got her. She is improving slowly. I may start her on a round of antiB's this weekend as the swelling is still there.

Oops... Liz, I did realize they were like that when you SAVED them =D> I was referring to Gary's post above... seems his birds keep bleeding and getting infected sores..... thought maybe there was something cutting them in his cage :? Strange that he would keep finding bloody feet :?

Candace
This was a different cage, so different birds.
But I seem to periodically have this problem, where I would find blood on the perch, then find one of the birds with the bottom of its foot abraded raw.

I had thought it was from abrasion on the dried poop.
To try to prevent that, I weekly (or more often) sand the perches clean and scrape the dried poop off the cage floor, then I wet sponge the wire grate floor to remove the smaller pieces of poop.

BUT for the 2nd bird that has a wound on the wing shoulder, this was the first time I had a bird with bleeding other than its foot. I had not seen any fighting. But that does not mean they did not fight when I was not around, which would be most of the time.
