Re: Finches from Petsmart
What kind of cheese do you use? I thought dairy is NOT good for finches/birds?

Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

Hahahaah lol yeah it was on the efinch site, it said that cheese was low in lactose so birds could consume it but they would only absorb protein and a couple other vitamins I think. I was surprised when I seen that it was ok to feed cheese as well but epriddy is only doing what he seen was ok. Im with him in that the site needs some updating.epriddy wrote:hey now! So I should grate bell peppers aswell?, and apples?cindy wrote:Grating I found was best with foods like carrots. I scrub and peel the carrots first since sometimes the organic is not readily available.
Thanks

Interesting! I found what you are referring to in the FIC... Didn't know that, I always though cheese is bad. Sorry for my comment then...epriddy wrote:hey now! I read grated cheese was ok on that same info site to the left. maybe that page is ready for an update!!!!!

I don't think it's your fault for thinking its wrong, if I never seen it on that website I would have fell off my chair. But tbh something doesn't seem right about that, everywhere I read cheese was bad and I'm still hesitant to add any cheese to the cage.Ursula wrote:Interesting! I would avoid cheese...it is full of fat and can contain tiny molds which we might be able to handle but a bird may not...we go through the cheese, dog food, human cracker debate often...stick to what is for birds, along with veggies, etc. JMO...besides birds may not be able to handle all the dairy (lactose). And no...you can't give your birds ice cream for dessert...even if it has a cherry on top!

I agree with this, I would not feeding anything that is not made for birds except fruits, veggies and eggs. I don't think feeding something that could upset their stomach and for such a tiny stomach as Cindy stated the molds could kill them.cindy wrote:I would avoid cheese...it is full of fat and can contain tiny molds which we might be able to handle but a bird may not...we go through the cheese, dog food, human cracker debate often...stick to what is for birds, along with veggies, etc. JMO...besides birds may not be able to handle all the dairy (lactose). Hahah lol just stick to fruits, veggies and eggfood. I guess bread would as a treat be ok. But that's pretty much it.epriddy wrote:LOL.

Stay away from:
Chocolate
Caffeine
Processed foods
Artificial colors and or flavours
Avocado
Seeds and pits of most fruits and veggies are bad
Milk products
Alcohol
Basically if your not sure you should find out first. You don't want to regret it later. I'm sure I'm missing some things on the list though.....

Re: Finches from Petsmart
I was curious now and googled it and I think MOST sites/vets/experts agree on NOT to feed cheese, but there are some (besides the FIC) that say it's ok. I even found a site that offered advice on which food scraps to feed to backyard birds...
I would never feed food scraps to any birds, backyard or pet...
The only "food scraps" that my birds get is occasionally left over plain pasta (just the cooked spaghetti without anything on them) or rice (just the plain rice). And I do feed mashed hardboiled egg and veggies and fruit (which I also eat, so it's sort of people food...
)
I also found this recent article and thought it's rather interesting, although also most stated wasn't new to me: http://www.birdchannel.com/bird-diet-an ... acker.aspx

Re: Finches from Petsmart
There really is a vast amount of false information regarding pets and proper care. Many of the top brands of cat and dog food available on the market are all filled with fillers such as corn and rice which cats and dogs cannot properly break down and use. People are always misguided into thinking they can feed foods to animals like milk to cats which makes them sick. I wish people would read more about the pets they were getting before buying on impulse. Honestly I find myself doing research FOR friends and family just so that THEIR pets can live healthy and happy lives.Ursula wrote:I was curious now and googled it and I think MOST sites/vets/experts agree on NOT to feed cheese, but there are some (besides the FIC) that say it's ok.
