No she didn't suggest that. I told her his symptoms (swelling above both eyes, one more than the other, no swelling around the eye, or below the eye. Normal droppings. no discharge from nares or eyes. Still eating and drinking) Since these are my first LG's I pretty much have to rely on the internet and what other people suggest. This could be why he was sold. There's no way to tell of course.
thanx for the info Misty. I'll check both out.

One eye colds are usually a sign of Ornithosis and this in itself is the reason you wouldn't want to breed this male but Ornithosis can be treated with Doxycycline.

Misty~ The reason I was not prescribed Doxycycline is because Jem doesn't have Ornithosis. He has sinusitis. his eyes are clear, no discharge, no swelling of or around the eye or nose. He has never been in an outside aviary let alone around any wild birds. If you go to this page and scroll down to the third photo, this is exactly what Jem looked like.

The sinus swelling has nearly gone away after 3 days of treatment!!! He's active, eating like a pig, bathing, flying around like a jet, and singing like a canary! :D =D>

Thank you so much Cindy! It really looks good so far [-o< I can't believe how much he's improved in so little time. I honestly think keeping him on the antibiotics I had here until the meds from Laraine came kept him from dying. Even if it wasn't the right kind it kept him from getting worse. it's a good thing I am hyper-vigilant with my little finches!

I'm so glad to hear he's well on his way to a full recovery! Thank goodness you got the meds in time!

Thanks Mary! I was so afraid I was going to lose him! I'm so happy he's well on his way to recovery. He's kind of driving my hen a little nuts today with all of his Dip, duck, dive and dodging all over the flight!
Cindy, should I leave the heat lamp in there until the medicine dose is over?

I would leave the lamp, especially if your weather is damp and chilly. I realize they are indoors but when it gets cold here in Florida the house feels chilled...the heat to a sick bird feels good and helps.

No problem, they both seem to really enjoy the extra warmth. I do have another kind of weird question- I have the heat lamp at the end of the flight where the nest box is. Not shining on it but close enough that it warms the air a little over there. She's laid 5 eggs but still not incubating at night. The heat lamp goes off when the lights go off because I don't have a plug other than the one the timer is on. Do you think the heat lamp has anything to do with them not incubating yet? Or do you think she won't start incubating until the whole clutch is laid? I'm just an anxious grandma I guess. #-o

Most hens/birds incubate when the hen is completely done laying.
the heat lamp should not have to much to do with her not sitting.

Perhaps I read wrong but I don't think you posted pictures of your male Jem and from what I read it sounded like an eye cold not a sinus problem. Perhaps I read in haste - both areas are very close and as with people we know the nasal can easily cause issues with our eyes. With all the imports lately it is those birds that are around our cage bred birds at fairs or even in private homes as breeders acquire additional stock, new species, etc...

It was not an attack on Jem but a suggestion not a diagnosis. Cindy mentioned the disease and I found the link on Laraine's website. It is usually very rare of Laraine to prescribe a certain product anymore because of just this thing... I did find this link from Vetafarm regarding sinusitis.

http://www.vetafarm.com/pages/Sinusitis-in-birds-.html

I do hope he continues to improve and that he remains perfectly healthy.

goodness... I didn't think it was anything but a helpful suggestion Misty. No offense taken here. Did I say something wrong?

Trish, that is a good reference site on the condition you gave from ladygouldian. I noticed the treatment Tylosin was mentioned a few times. Hope he continues to improve.

Jem's improving every day. =D> [-o< Thanks for asking. The swelling on one side of his head is gone but the other side is still a little swollen. That was the worst side anyway. He's back to normal in all other ways. [-o< It says to keep him on it for 10 days! Wow, that's a long time to be on an antibiotic. Must be a tough bug to kill.
I read that dust can actually cause sinus infections. Now I'm worried about the Aspen shavings I've been using. I worry more about the finches that I did with my own kids when they were little!!!! #-o
