Beautiful little white chested gouldian joined the list this morning...on the floor gasping, and dead within the hour in a hospital cage. This was a very active little bird begging furiously off the hen...never thought I would lose this one.6 weeks out the nest.

Paul,

You might take a look at this link:
http://www.pet-informed-veterinary-advi ... trich-what

Canker can manifest itself as a respiratory problem (see the symptoms section) and it can spread easily once it gets into an aviary.

Just another idea.

Ta for that...there are so many possibilities.I'll try a general disinfectant for starters...baby fawn diamond firetail just left the nest this morning...I think there are two others in the nest....Fingers crossed.

Keeping an abandoned quails nest company....there are many of these.

Paul, do you have access to a company that can do tests for you? Similar to this one: www.avianbiotech.com. If so, perhaps you could get one or two of those babies tested and see if they can pinpoint what you are dealing with.

Paul, the fawn diamond is adorable! I hope the rest of the babies do well for you and you find out what is running through your aviary.

Fawn diamond firetail and his brother now off the floor and in the high branches...both look fine.Hope they stay that way.
I'm ready to sweep out and disinfect the birdroom floor and walls but have to wait for some young 'uns to leave their nests first.Plus the quail have decided to sit tight in the middle of the floor on 9 eggs.

Paul, so sorry to hear of your troubles. :(

This is probably something that you already do but sometimes I dust my nests with a bird-safe powder that is supposed to help with insects -- it is mostly inert. I then put a small amount of grass or nesting material on top. Every year, when I replace or clean nests I re-dust them before I put them back in and it has seemed to help (although I do have a regular miticide program, too).
