Well he hopefully looks like a little Pirate who's just gonna throw on a peg-leg and shrug it off like it's nothin'.
His face is priceless. "All this SEED!!! And I just have to sit here!!"
Like Bubba in a Lazyboy chair with a beer cooler attachment, and a potato chip dispensor. ;)
He looks like a little cloud. Smooochas!

What a beauty! Hopefully that leg "falls off" or maybe you will need to do what Sally did for her little guy after it dries up....clip it??!?! How does it look? Will he be lucky enough to avoid an infection?
My little Spice Finch "Ziggy" lost her leg at the hip. She has definitely become my strong, fastest, and hardest to catch bird EVER!!! Wish you and Max the best. I know you need a break after this heartbreaking week. Sending you a hug....

Right now, he's using the leg just for balance. Not sure what will happen when it completely dies and dries up.
My concern is infection and or gangrene, but so far there are no signs of either. No oozing, no bad smells.
Max appears to be comfortable, not showing signs of pain. He is active, eating, drinking, and beep-meeping away.
If was sure that it is completely dead, (no sensation) and it becomes a hindrance rather than an asset, I wouldn't hesitate to snip it off.

The thought of snipping a birds leg makes my stomach turn! I really really really hope the leg comes back to life!

That will not happen.
If you look at the pictures, that leg is black and will not come back to life. When it turns black like that, there is no blood flowing through it (which means it's dead).
The question now, is how far up it goes, and what will happen with it in the next little while (?)

Think of it like clipping off a toenail or hair. It's there but its painless to remove. That might help.

Wow you have learned your Bird anatomy. What is the best line of thinking when you are sure the tissue has died? To remove it or wait? Infection is the concern for sure. How are you? You have been having a rough go lately with your feathered friends.
I came in tonight and someone has pecked Blue's cheek enough to make it bleed. For now think I will just watch. Does a lot of egg food get them more tempermental? They have all been getting along find. I am dying to check the nest but haven't.
Hope all is well at your home.

I still don't think I would be able to do it. I clip my cats nails myself (he purrs and absolutely adores it for some reason) and even then, I have this uber anxiety about clipping the quick and I have been clipping his nails for years!
I know it doesn't hurt them. But just the thought. Wishing you lots of luck Elana!

You're lucky that your cat enjoys nail trimming.
My little dog Katy, absolutely hates getting her nails cut, and it's always a major struggle (like trying to hold a greased piglet
).
Once, quite a few years ago, I was cutting the nails on our Irish Terrier. I had him standing on a special table (which I used for grooming). Anyhow, he was bouncing this way and that way, and horsing around. ...I snipped his nail, he yelped , and a red something flew onto the floor...
I almost had a heart attack, thinking that I'd cut his toe off.
Looking at his foot, I saw no blood ( to my relief). Searching on the floor, I found the missing severed 'toe'. It was a piece of a red doggie treat, that Clancy had kicked off the table while he was horsing around.
It took my heart quite some time to get back to normal.
★Anyway, if you ever find yourself in a situation, where you do accidentally cut into the quick, and bleedibg occurs (be it cat nail, or bird nail), sticking the bleeding toe into some corn starch, or flour, will stop the bleeding. Just a good technique to know (in case) if you don't have anything else handy.
