Vents protrude a little (which I didn't realize before I saw it either).

Michelle, it sounds to me that the area is just irritated more then anything else. I wish there was a way she'd stop picking at it, so it could just heal. They need to invent those collars that they have for dogs and cats.

I hope she heals very soon. You are doing a good job with her.

Renee- They totally need to make E-collars for birds!! I think mine would have a fit if I actually put one on.

Liz- Thank you for telling me! They look so alien when they are bald! I'll post pictures tonight!

Ms. Horn, they do make E collars for bird, usually hookbills. My Gray decided to jump of a two story cage and forgot to flap, he split his keel and had to have surgery. He had to wear the cone of shame for a while, he was not allowed out of the cage for two months, he was not a happy bird, he sat there wearing the latest in E collars grumbling.

I have never seen them for finches. Hope your little bird gets better fast. She is there is an oinment that helps heal and keeps them from biting themselves. I'll check and see also.

Well, I guess I was wrong. I know the pictures looked worse to me on the camera then she really did, but they look bad. They were taken before cleaning her up, so she is a little messy. Once I clean her, I do the Neo and put her right back, so I took pictures first. I thought the wound looked like it was healing, but she looks swollen doesn't she! The scab is smaller, but the skin around it looks weird! I think all the picking is causing the swelling. I felt around there, and nothing hard or odd was there. What the heck is going on?! She doesn't bleed anymore, and otherwise seems fine. Ugh, what to do?

Lisa,
I just not sure what is going on. I have never seen anything like that either. I had a grasskeet with a prolaspe once. It was just like her canal inverted so it sas like an outy... no blood on sores. She also died within the hour.
Is the bird eating and acting normal" I would probably put her on oral antibiotic also. Just to keep any infection from spreading, if there is any. Or to keep her from an infection if she is getting the area dirty and is still picking at it.
Have you asked at that bird place that offers treatments? Maybe they have an idea.
Continued prayers for her recovery.

Lisa, I just realized I was calling you Michelle, lol. Sorry about that.

I'm not familiar with this condition but I thought I've seen pictures before of something similar and I looked for it this morning.

Here is the link to some articles, might be something worth looking into. Hope you can figure it out soon :(

Renee- No worries on the name thing! I am the WORST at remembering names. I'm the girl who will be introduced to someone, and five minutes later have no clue what that person's name is.

So I got Heckle out this morning, and she looks outstanding. Such a huge difference from yesterday! I think the more worked up she gets, the more swollen it gets. I took pictures again just because the difference is so drastic. I noticed it wanted to almost "separate" more when I cleaned her off, but went almost back to normal when I put the Neo on her. I'll post the pictures tonight, you won't believe them! My poor bird has no dignity left!

Candace- As always thank you for your support! She is eating and drinking like normal, and has the whole time. I have her on antibiotics, and will continue until she is fully recovered. I don't think Magnolia would be able to help me with something like a prolapse. It's not a vet, but they treat for things that we could at home like ASM. What I hate about this whole thing, is both the Hooligans used to come greet me when I walked up to the cage; now they fly away in fear when I come near them.

LOL! I'm the same way, it goes right out of my head sometimes.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear that Heckle is making an improvement. Hope she keeps it up, and stops picking at her butt!!

=D> Looking better....
I know what you mean about making your animals run from you. Here you are giving care, probably administring life saving meds and the birds just think you are killing them :? Sometimes they just don't know what is best for them. After she is well and in time they will recondition and be back to greeting .... once you quit catching here everyday :D
