If the injury is a soft tissue injury it will likely with time be able to repair itself. Can he open and close his toes, if so that is a good sign. If not and the leg is dangling it is likely dislocated and the muscle damaged, it may or may not heal. I have seen birds recover with rest and an adjustment to the cage so they do not have to move much. If he battered his wing in trying to get free he likely broke blood feathers. If the wing is not dislocated or broken there is no need to wrap it to the body, he may need the wings to help balance himself. Watch the wing are to make sure the broken feathers are not causing an issue, discomfort or become inflamed, you may have to pull the broken blood feathers out.

Some birds will surprise you and with time after a trauma like this they will recover the use of the leg and foot.

Thanks Cindy.

Regarding the leg/foot: As you can see in my crazy little diagram, the bottom part of tbe leg and foot, are completely black. The foot is a mangled black mass, appearing almost fused together. No toe movement.

He does however use it to balance himself.

Regarding the wing: There is really hardly a wing to speak of, just a little wing nub (no feathers left).

I'll try and take a better picture.

Max is amazing me every day, with his strength and resilience.

I should have taken a picture of him when I found him, but I thought to myself, time for action, not pictures (also, I thought he was a gonner anyway, so it seemed pointless to snap pictures of a bloody dying bird).

He sure has surprised me so far.

cindy and Friends

Finally managed a couple of pictures of the little scamp (he fought every step of the way).

It would appear that the leg is getting a little more colour, lower down into it.

The wing however is another thing. This is all that's left of it. Just a little nub. Not sure what can be done with it (?) If anything at all.

Aside from that, he appears to be doing alright.

Max, the Super Zeb :-)

That leg and foot do look better!!! Wow. Can a wing grow back? what an amazing little guy. Is it drying up or still have some warmth to it? what an amazing little fella Max is.

Oh my... I think I would be crying and sitting into the cage all the time I only could. Poor boy... I hope he will be so stalwart still.

From what I can see, the Radius and the Ulna are missing, with only the Humerous left behind (the nub). It looks to me, like the wing was severed at the elbow or thereabouts.

:-) Crying is not going to help him.
He is a strong boy, and very determined to live, so I help him any way I can.

I don't know about a boxing glove, but if you can make a wing prosthesis out of toothpicks, that might be helpful :-).

A Max Update.

Our boy Max, is still with us :-).

We did have a bit of bleeding from the leg (around the inside of the knee, where the leg bends). I'm not sure if he was picking on it, or if he over extended the leg, cracking new skin. This is actually a good thing in one way (showing that there is circulation in that upper leg.

I treated it, and the bleeding stopped.

For now, I am still keeping Max, in a tiny little cage (no perches at all. I don't want him over doing things, for at least another week, at which point I will transfer him into a slightly bigger cage.

The poor little fella is bored out of his mind. I might offer him a mirror, to give him something with which to occupy himself. Maybe a bit of dry grass as well, to poke around at, just to while away the hours.
