Sally that is hilarious you think he is a BIT spoiled? =)) =)) =)) Just a wee bit.
I will try and clip his nails. I had a friend show me how on her bird who was a bit bigger. I am a wee bit askeered (southern scared) to try it. They are hooky so I should. I am beginning to think that even though he squawks about getting caught that he likes it?
Silly bugger. I don't think he needs any more mite treatments I don't want to poison him. I guess will try something for moisture. Daily antibiotics isn't good. He isn't red or inflamed anymore. He is just scratching the lil drumstick.

Sally I'd have to agree, I believe ALL species once they are senior citizens should be spoiled, and basically get to do whatever they want... they made it this far... LOL
@Spreckles
Just followed up on this thread and wanted to send my best, I was MIA for a bit i moved and well yo uknow crazy life stuff, but I was reading on Blue and OMG he's so beautiful! I hope he is better and not scratching anymore. Sounds like he was getting there, How about now? And don't worry that you spoil your birds, my birds are VERY spoiled... I don't have children so my birds are my kids... My biiggest problem now is figuring out how to put a chair in my bird room so i can just sit in there with them and them NOT pooping on it... but I don't htink that's gunna happen!!! LOL Hope Blue is still on the mend, or even better, completely done and all healed up! And btw, I have to agree with you on this forum, I've learned so many INvaluable things that, well, my birds just wouldn't be in as good a place if it weren't for these fine people on here, and I know SO much now (i'm not bragging, trust me I know there's PLENTY more to learn) I can't thank this wonderful forum enough!

Thanks for introducing yourself! I have so many threads about Blue you wouldn't think I have any other birds. It took years to develop this relationship with him. I am looking forward to meeting your little feathered friends. Elana found a pair of Cordon Bleu's and named her little boy Bleu. But between Uno and Max they don't get much press yet. What kind of birds do you have? A bird room?

Blue isn't looking so hot. I think he is losing weight. He isn't in front of the mirror. His colors are looking faded. He is still scratching. Honestly I think my little man may be giving out. I have done everything possible I think.
Not sure if he misses his little hen and is lonely? We thought she was over preening him but it looks like he was the one hurting himself. I'm thinking about putting her back with him and see if he is pining for a friend. It's doubtful he has a contagious problem, right? He's just old.

I just don't know if I can stand to move and lose my bird all at once. I haven't had the guts to say it but I hope if he is getting to the end he just passes naturally with no trouble. My sweet little buddy. Crap crap crying again over a bird.

I did put Nellie back. They seem happier. They look so identical it still makes me wonder if Blue is a hen but it doesn't matter. After all this time he can be a he-she-it. He went back cor the mirror that's a good sign. Nellie is such a sweet bird she looks so lovely next to pitiful, but here's to hope!

Yeah, I cried over a bird recently as well. I'm sure I'll do it again eventually. Here's hoping that is as far off into the future as their little birdy lifespans will allow.

I, too, am "askeered" to do the nail clipping thing, but my little guys really need to have it done. I went out and bought a cuticle nipper to do the job. Probably not 'til next weekend though. I need to get a net, I'm no good catching them bare handed. That IS a big advantage to this cage though - I can just slip in the divider with one bird on one side and the one I want to catch on the other and cut way way down on the chasing around. Plus only stressing one bird instead of two.

Turn towards home, and go there. Many overs, over woods and fields, streams and hills, many overs. Just turn towards home. How else would one go there? Perhaps it was a dream, and you have awakened from it. May the earth rise up beneath you, with home in your heart, and your person waiting.

You bring up a good point. I wonder how many folks do use nets. Is it really much easier????? The nail thing was not hard. The hold that is recommended over in the finch info site works perfectly. For whatever reason the birds seem to hold perfectly still. With plenty of light you can see the quick and know where not to cut.
It helps if you have ever cut dogs toenails.
Blue is hanging in there. Feathers don't look so hot but he seems ok.

Nets made catching a lot easier when I was a kid. If you have a properly-sized-for-the-cage net with a short handle and smaller hoop.

You could use the hoop part to "encourage" them over to one side, preferably on the floor, then sort of gently press the hoop to the side of the cage and they will sort of naturally hop INTO the net. Then you can scoop with your hand, use the other hand to take them out of the net with no chance of escape.

Probably I acquired quite a bit of practice as a child and it will be harder than that when I try it for the first time in decades, but if I could do it when I was 7, I'm sure I can still do it when I'm mumbledy-seven, LOL!

There's just a lot less chasing around the cage with a net once you get the knack.

He's here. Every once in awhile he scratches himself up. He is really happy with Nellie in the cage. Still looks a little rough but not red and raw anymore. Think he will be around for awhile.
