Re: An Accident. ..
Hello All...
We had a tiny set back today with Max.
He was bouncing around when I was cleaning his cage, and his little wing nub started bleeding again. He was spotting here and there on the paper, and I didn't like that (always the worry of infection).
Grabbing him (and he fought me every step of the way), I slathered him with Polysporin, and put him back into a clean cage.
He immediately attacked the spray millet and the spinach, enjoying a good meal.
Then amazingly enough, he sidled up to the corner of the cage from where I was observing him. I beeped at him, and he got a little closer. Then I drew in a big breath, and breathed the warm air on him. Well, he was in heaven. It was absolutely astounding. He dragged himself as close as he possibly could, to get closer to the bars. There he settled down, about an inch away from my face, and I had to breathe on him. We sat like that for quite a while, untill I thought I was going to hyper ventilate, and while little boy Max, fell asleep.
I have never had a bird do that before, and it kinda warmed my heart ♡.

Re: An Accident. ..
A Max Update .
Max, had a little setback a few days ago.
When I was cleaning his cage, he went a little wacka-do-kookoo. Started fluttering around, running in all directions, jumping this way and that way, and opened the scab on the end of his wing nub.
Well, he started bleeding all over himself, which freaked him out even more , poor little guy.
Finally I had to grab him, wash him, and swaddle him in paper towels to get him to settle down.
Once he calmed down and stopped bleeding, I slathered him with Polysporin and put him back in his cage.
Today, he started the same behavior, so right off the bat, I grabbed him and carried him around, as I finished cleaning his cage with one hand. Not quite sure what's making him panic all of a sudden, other than the fact that he must be feeling better, and reverting to the 'flight' mentality.

What an amazing story. Blue pecks his mirror too, sometimes it just doesn't act right but he mostly likes it.
hummmm physical therapy for a 1 legged 1 winged bird...this is a challenge and balance is an issue for sure. Does he like a bath? Later on when no more chance of bleeding maybe a little covered bird bath to splash in and flap around some. I think your dead on about the flight response coming back to him. It is amazing the shock of this severe an injury didn't kill him. But it didn't, so maybe that mirror does need a little helmet.
A low obstacle course is a great idea. How does he balance now? Can he hop on one foot at all?

for the lil tough guy. Rocky Balboa got nuthin on him.

I honestly cannot believe this kiddo is alive. Can you run some paper up the sides of the cage and give him a "padded cell" effect? (heck he's a zebbie and they all need padded cells *snicker*)

Max, manages to balance most of the time. He uses his good foot, and his dead foot like a sort of a peg leg. He also uses his tail to counter balance .
Regarding baths: I've started giving him a bath every few days. I get a bowl of luke warm water, sit him in it while holding his head up, and let him splash in there for a bit.
Life is not easy for him, but he's alive . In the future, I would like to get one of my older Societies as a companion for him. I am also hopeful , that eventually he will manage to perch, for more than a second or two.

Max, is very much alive.
As mentioned above, I am hopeful for improvement in the future.
Once he is completely healed, I would like to work on perching.
Because he is also missing most of the wing on the same side, I've decided to leave his dead foot alone for the time being . He does use it to balance.

Peg Leg Max the pirate birdie.
Any toy boats in his future? He is a trouper. It would be amazing to figure out a little birdie prosthesis. he would probably pick it off but wouldn't he be something? He ALREADY IS AMAZING!
