Is this a fairly new practice or have I not been paying close enough attention to the bird books? I have only started hearing about worming birds in the past year or so. I was wondering if any one here has ever done it and how you go about doing it and if it is something that mostly concerns birds being kept out side.

Right or wrong, I always do it as part of my quarantine (especially with wild-caught birds). I use wormout gel, and add a dash of strawberry syrup to make it taste less nasty. (You mix it with water and provide it as their only source of water for 2 days.)

I believe it is important to worm if you are feeding live food, or as Hilary said, bringing new birds into your flock.

Thanks, where is a good place to get wormer at? Also is there different wormers for different kinds of birds or is it just a matter of different dosages. I was thinking I should probably give some to my pigeons and dove since they are out side.

I have never heard of finches with worms (?)
I thought finches were not sensible for them?
Over here we only use products against worms for parakeets...
But if finches are able to get a worm infection, living food can't be the cause of the infection I guess. IF you buy your food from pet stores and don't catch them yourself.
These in laboratory circumstances bred insects don't carry any possible germs. That's the reason I buy my mosquito larvae's from pet stores instead of catching them.

I think the finches to be concerned about are primarily wild-caught and those kept in outdoor aviaries.
