How do I use Ronivet 12% for baby gouldian finches.

Hello to every one in this forum ")

This is my first time posting and Im sure everyone who answers will do the best they can to help.

So I have 2 baby gouldians 1 is 12 days and the other is 11 days old.
I noticed that the oldest has a shade of green to his poop and some one had told me to use Ronivet but I dont know how to use it for baby birds. I read you can change the strength but dont know how to do that.

this is what that person told me to do:
> I would mix your food up with a little of ronnivet mix plus water then add one or two
drops of nystatin to the food mix .. depends on how much food you mix up .. I always mixed up
a heaped teaspoon of food added water to the desired consistency .
this way it is fresh daily< what exactly does she mean?
because for RONIVET 6% the Dose rate is 4 grams per 4 Litres of drinking water for 7 days for LARGE birds, and 1 teaspoon to
1 quart (4 cups) of drinking water for SMALLER birds for 7 days.
so I guess 1 teaspoon to 1 quart (4 cups)of drinking water for 7 days can be used for finches but somewhere in this forum some one said "I have Ronivet 6% and I use - 4x dosage for 3 days"
Dose he mean 4 teaspoons to 16 cups (1 gal) for 3 days instead of 7 or what?

I just want to know how to much ronivet to mix with how much water. then I want to know how much of the ronivet mix should I add to how much hand feed formula. Does that make any sence.

for example:
mix 1/8 teaspoon of ronivet to 1/2 teaspoon of water.
then to 1 teaspoon of hand feed add the ronivet mixture to the desired consistency for 5-7 days. I just made this up but this is how I would like it to be explained because this is driving me CRAZY. OOO AND I HAVE THE 12%.

what would also help if it can be mixed in small amounts since it is for just one bird. does the ronivet have to mixed fresh every day or can the mix be saved for a certain amonut of days in the fridge?

Boy this is alot of stuff "O

thanks
maria

Personally I would not give such young baby's Ronivet unless I knew for sure it had an infection of some sort. Ronivet (Ronidazole) according to my vet can (but not always) cause unrepairable damage to them that young.
I would send the poop in for a test first to see why its green. Did the parents not just start feeding them more greens/soft food?
Perhaps try give them probiotic first before meds?

You mentioned handfeeding formula--are you handfeeding these babies? I have never given Ronivet to a baby bird, so I really can't given you any advice on it. I know that I had read before (for adult birds) that it was safe to use Ronivet 6% up to four times the dosage, so when they came out with Ronivet 12%, people were using it at up to two times the dosage.

If you are handfeeding and suspect a yeast infection, nystatin or medistatin can be given, or I have even had good results just mixing baby applesauce with the handfeeding formula, then thinning to proper consistency with warm water, as long as the yeast infection was just getting started.

Ah missed the handfeeding bit Sally.

I too would go with another route. Especially hand fed is unlikely Ronivet would solve anything. The chances of a protozoal infection is very slim other than if these were abandoned after being fed prior by infected birds.

Greenish poop can mean too many things I'm afraid. I would listen to the advice from those with more handfeeding experience than myself.

I have been feeding them since day one. this person told me to keep them on ronivet till they fledge at normal strength. I wonder how much it would cost to test his poop? The last time I took one of my birds to the vet it died on the way home. So I lost the money and my bird and never found out what was wrong with it "( I dont think they knew much on birds and the other vet is toooo far from were I live.

they couldn't have gotten a protozoal infection from you hand feeding them. I wouldn't give it.
I recall my handfeds getting green poop and I would treat as yeast with some applesauce in the formula and nystatin if it didn't clear up and that worked fine, as I recall.

Just my opinion on limited handfeeding experience, but I would keep my young birds off meds. Keep your handfeeding area and tools clean/sterile. Give good proper formula as per instructions and only treat anything that might occur such as a yeast infection as they occur. Keeping a young bird on meds for no particular reason does not seem like good advice. I can understand preventative treatments on adult birds in quarantine, but handfeds...
You can very easily check up on the net on most meds to see what they are recommended for and then subsequently check up the disease, its life cycle and how birds contract them. I love how easy information is available these days. I've had to educate myself this way and by other means like this forum. Often people don't know what meds really treat and recommend them for all sorts of things because the med may have worked for them in xyz situation which was possibly mis-diagnosed. Without understanding what problem you have its far more difficult to decide what meds to give. I still get rather queesy about self diagnosing my birds. Luckily I do have an avian vet that I can bounce ideas off of too.
Never be afraid to question why. It's amazing how that little word can make you see things differently.

I am going to have to agree with all of the above.
Probably a yeast infection. After my little Tiny Tim had his first sign of a yeast infection I started adding a little apple sauce to each of his feeding thereafter, even after it cleared up...just to make sure that it wouldn't happen again.

This is good info,So for how many days in total did you keep them on the applesauce?
can the apple sauce be added to every feed and till they fledge?
or is it only for when their dropings changes?

I hope this is how im supposed to reply to a message.

I am not sure if everyone else does the same thing or not. :? I mixed a little applesauce in every second feeding until he weaned. I just really didn't want him to get sick again under my care, especially after him being the only baby abandoned in a clutch of 6. He is now 7 months old, hand tamed, and still mommy's .little man.

I wish you only the best results. [-o<
It is a long and tedious job, I actually had to take Timmy with me to work every day, and even on a planned all day road trip. But it is worth it in the end, to be able to say I did it. =D>
