Foot/toe injury

Post by JRs Gouldians » Thu Apr 21, 2011 5:08 pm

Hey I noticed one of my new little guys was favoring 1 foot. After a good look over I noticed one of his toes is injured. My question is what should I do? It looks like the whole nail and a little bit of the actual tip of the toe is hanging by a nerve. Here a few pics of it. What do you guys think I should do?

Poor little guy must have gotten it caught. Hope you guys can help me and him. :(

Owwiee... I would do nothing at this point. Most times it will either heal or fall off
You can wash it and apply an topical ointment that inhibits infection but I never do this... seems it just causes the bird to pick at it more. I have never had one get infected yet but if I did notice redness and swelling I would put the bird in a cage and administer antibiotics to the drinking water and wash and dress the toe.
These finches are much tougher than you would think.
I would check your cages to see where this toe mishap could of happens so the you can fix the problem to prevent others from getting injured. Cage corners, wicker baskets and rope perches/swings are all places that can trap toes.

I agree with Candace.
It doesn't look red and infected to me, I'm sure over time it will just fall off.
Best of luck
