Could this be gout and not bumblefoot

Post by Malzmom » Mon Aug 13, 2007 6:44 am

Well this is an update, I quarantined my little guy for 8 days, his foot was beautiful, standing on the perch, no more red areas above the nails, bottom of foot clear. So I put him back in the big cage with his buddy. Not two weeks and he is favoring the foot again and I see there is a red area back on one of his toes, he is sitting on the bottom of the cage once in a while, but eating and sometimes flitting around. WHAT THE HECK is going on??? This has been on and off for months. Am I missing something? The cage and perches were cleaned, everything was perfect. Another question is it must be something inside him because my other finch has nothing wrong with him.
Should I maybe treat him with something for internal bacteria or viral?
I have been reading a lot online and now suspect GOUT, could this be the problem do you think? There wasn't a lot as far as preventative except for feeding cherries and going to the vet for prescriptions, which I don't have a vet in my area so that is out..
Thanks to anyone who might know about this.

One of my canary hens had a few spells of gout back when I first got her. Every time she would eat egg, her toes on one foot would swell up, along with the red streaks running up her leg, it looked very painful. I finally had to severely limit her protein (eggfood). Over time, she seems to have built up her tolerance as she is now able to eat small amounts without getting the gout.

You could try the unsweetened cherry juice, mixed 50/50 with water, to see if it helps your bird. It did give my hen some relief.

Just got home from Wild Oats, got the juice and black cherries...I will limit the egg and see what happens. Thanks so much for your helpful note.
