But my impression was that the beak of a male will turn bright red when he is in breeding condition? Not black?

I'm sorry I can't be of much help. I can't explain why your singing male has a beak that is turning black. I thought only females showed this kind of behavior. How old is this bird? Could your Gouldian possibly be a singing female? :?: Good luck. :)

my males beaks were as red as a cherry. As far as I know, only hens will have black beaks :-?

Some hens can twitter but it is not like the song of the male .
That bird looks like a male but the beak looks like a hens..
Maybe a picture of the belly and a clearer picture of the neck collar would help :)

I had a couple males get dark beaks like this - it seems to be a genetic thing, because the males that had the darker beaks were full brothers, and it did seem to be in correlation to coming into breeding condition.
