Crop is enlarging pls help. Sour-impacted crop

Post by handes » Wed Aug 29, 2007 11:28 am

Hi everybody.
I have a zebra finch hen,i dont know her age but she seems to be really old. Since winter she developed a crop problem. Her crop is enlarging and sagging through to her belly. She is often regurgitating crop liquid. My veterinary advised me to stop breeding her and add some baking soda to her drinking water but nothing changed. What can i do pls help??
Thankyou.. Pls check my poor girl.

I'm sorry to see your pretty little thing with such a problem! First you need to go see an Avian Vet - someone who works with birds, Someone with a decree in birds. Here's a page with a list of Vets - pick one in your area: Just click on it!

http://www.abvp.com/find_results.aspx?c ... mit=Submit

It look to me like you might have a little girl with a tumor. But Please Don't take my word for it, I'm not a Vet, just a bird lover like you! If that's what it is, the Vet will be able to tell you of your options. Good Luck! *Blaze*

You mentioned "birdsand" ... I am in no way an expert, I'm just starting out, but that word sent up a red flag for me, and I recall reading a page about "impacted crop" or "clogged crop" or something to that effect.

You may want to start searching for similar terms just too see if the symtoms match what is happening to your bird.

Hopefully somone with much more knowlage than I can either advise you further on this, or rule it out completely.

Also if your not in the USA see if you can search for any Avian Vet's in your area, there may be one that you could at least call for advice.

Maybe she has a digestive problem and cannot digest the food from her crop, so it just keeps getting more and more food in it???

Thank you very much for your answers,i will research that clogged crop.Things in her crop may have turned sour and having digestive problems her vent also dirty... She looks so placid and she is always gulping.
I will separate her today and put some guardian angel to drinking cup.Her looking makes me very sad,she is a very beloved bird. :( :(

I found this link: http://www.the-coop.org/cgi-bin/UBB/ult ... 2;t=002271

It's another message board, and the original poster is talking about a chicken, however in this case it was a fungal infection of the crop and an Avian Vet was required to diagnose and prescribe the appropriate medication and dosage.

It sounds like there are several possible causes for this trouble.

I wish you lots of luck with your bird!

Also found this link: http://www.pekinbantams.com/community/v ... p?p=134507

Again another chicken message board, but in this case a bit of oil and massage of the crop seems to have cured that bird.

Again, good luck! and let us know!!!

Rottielover if I ever have to post here again I hope you read my posting. You really seem to care about other members and their problems, and it's nice to know people like you are out there.

Handles I'm sorry I didn't do more research before I posted - there seems to be a lot of reasons for the same problem and I guess jumping to the conclusion that it maybe a tumor was way off base - But that's why I suggested talking to a avian Vet.

I'm not trying to step on anyone's toe's here, especially since I'm a "newbie".

There are several possiblities, and a tumor is certainly one of those, and I don't think anyone is "jumping to conclutions", we're just all expressing the possibilities.

No hard feelings :)

rottielover your informations was awesome,i am really grateful.my vet friend just went to school in England,in our country its very hard to find an avian vet, veterianaries are mostly care for cats and dogs.I am from Turkey. I will obtain nystatin drug and ask my vet friend for dosages.
FLAMEonfire you very kind and nice also, thank you its ok.I must have filled my profile.

hi handes
i think it just needs a good purge to clear the crop.i used to use epsom salts in the water but its not readily avaliable but you could use bicarbonate of soda or baking powder anything that is efervescent seems to work

ken
you can always tell a yorkshireman, but you cant tell him much
