I'm a new finch owner and have a concern about one of my male lady gouldians. I have had him for a week and he seems to have trouble flying. He was in a bird store in a small cage and the store owner said she had him since before he colored out. I brought him home and he is now in a large cage. He has trouble flying and frequently ends up on the bottom of the cage. He can fly to the top but seems to have trouble landing on branches and bars and ends up back on the bottom. He doesnt seem stressed at all and his feathers and color are beautiful, not puffed up or lethargic. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated.

I find when I move my gouldians from a small breeding cage, so of them seem to take a while before flying looks easy again....I think it will just take a little time until he gets his flying muscles back into shape....Some take longer than others...Just make sure he can reach food and water and all should be good!....Just keep an eye on him! ( I am sure you will)

I have a similar problem. I bought a male some months ago, who is beautiful, and seemed ok in the cage, but when I put him in the aviary, he was always on the floor, trying to fly but not getting high. I took him and saw his wing´s feathers, and they seemed like they were cut. I put him in the cage again and then again in the aviary to see if he had improved, but he never flies ok, so I put him in the cage again. Some days ago I put him in the aviary, since I see the feathers seem to be longer, and he doesn´t fly well, he spends much time on the floor (I have put him water and food on the floor), but he seems to be flying a little better and sometimes he manages to reach some of the objects in the aviary. I hope he learns to fly like in stages, reaching a higher point on each flight, but it´s sad to see the little thing spending much time on the floor. I don´t know what kind of problem is this, he seems healthy, but I think he has a birth defect or something. I suppose I should not try to breed with him, when the season begins.
