Hurt Gouldian - What else can I do?
This is a picture from yesterday....I don't want to disturb him and am letting him rest......I did find blood smeared on the food dish this morning, so I think he is really rubbing his eye and beak?...He is just sleeping today and he just moved himself closer to the heat lamp this afternoon....I have put Thrive into the soft food and sprinkled some on his seed, but I haven't seen him eat today....He looks so sore!....Could he be bleeding from the broken edge of his beak?.....I did put some Neosporin on his eye last night, but was unsure about him ingesting it if I put some on his beak....Any suggestions would be appreciated

I'd put Quick Gel on his beak and Terramycin antibiotic ointment for eyes on the eye. I might even give him some Metacam, an NSAID, for pain. Good Luck.

Haven't got any advice... I guess you'll have to keep it dead clean though. Good luck, and I hope he gets better soon.
This might sound silly actually... but would it be possible to do a fiddily bandage that goes over the eye, but not the other? Or stick something like a plaster over it? Just a guess, I'm probably wrong

Awe, Debbie I'm so sorry to read and see this. He looks like he hurts so much. Wish I could help, but I'd have no idea what to tell ya! Sounds like you're doing everything you can. Only thing I'd suggest is keep his hospital cage clean, maybe put a towel in, without a perch, so he can't rub himself on a perch. (and he'll be way comfy too!)

Re: Hurt Gouldian - What else can I do?
Debbie one of the books my husband got me said "for short term use apply opthalmic ointment (drops are preferable since they won't mat the feathers down) such as Neosporin and neoplolycin to your birds eye two to three times a day....careful not to get the neosporin in the nares/nostrils.
I am searching some rescue sites
You should really have a vet look at him...the eye can get infected and need a strong preventive antibiotic. If this is due to injury and infection sets in it can spread fast, I would not want to risk it going into the sinus and brain....it looks painful which will stress the bird out even more. I really would not doctor this myself. The eye looks swollen which is not a good sign.

Re: Hurt Gouldian - What else can I do?
Thank you for your caring!....It is so hard when they are hurt and there is little that you can do....I did get some polysporin eye drops in his eye....When I grabbed him, he barely moved, but he did fight while I held him....I was caught off guard and he almost wiggled out of my hand....He hopped around the cage and flew to the perch where he proceeded to wipe his eye....I am afraid that a vet is out of the question, so I am left to try what I can....He has settled down again and is sleeping....Fingers crossed he makes it another night....I will wash his face and beak in the morning and hope for the best...

Debbie, I wish I had some advice to offer on this, but I don't. So instead I am sending lots of get well wishes toward your little guy!

I will see what else I can find out for you. Do you have any antibiotic meds on hand, does his eye look swollen or infected? Try not to fuss with washing it to Mic, use the antibiotic drops. Keep him warm. Hope he is better tomorrow.

I agree with Cindy. If you can't get to a vet, keep doing the eye ointment and give Antibiotic in water or by syringe, usually 0.01cc to the side of the beak of Enrofloxyn or Amoxitex or Cipro, even Metronidazole is better than nothing at this point. Heat and hospital cage and keep checking periodically, as they do go downhill fast with infections. Keeping him and you in our prayers.

I have Amoxitex that I will put some in his water tomorrow morning...I will make sure to try to get some in his mouth in the morning as I am not sure if he drank anything today?

Hope he feels better soon Debbie
I would personally try the idea given regarding removing the perch. At least until it starts to heal.

Re: Hurt Gouldian - What else can I do?
I would carefully dose him by hand, leave a loow dish of food and water near him. If he perches as he gets better add a water tube with medicated water near him. He is going to try to keep warm to fight the swelling, pain and possible infection. If the infection gets bad and he developes a fever to fight it he wil dehydrate fast. Keep a close watch on him.

I was scared to even peek in on him this morning, and feared the worst....but he was eating seed this morning!....When I checked him again, he was by the heat....I am mixing up the Amoxitex and try to get a few drops in him with a dropper on the edge of his beak....I will keep you posted

Re: Hurt Gouldian - What else can I do?
could you wrap his perch with something soft so he wouldn't scrape the swollen eye on a hard surface? Maybe it would be better to remove the perch for the time being. I hope he recovers soon! Hurts just looking at his painfully swollen eye.
