Coccidia

My Java Finch has a bloody stool. The vet diagnosed the problem as Coccidiosis. He can only recommend a pro-biotic and poultry antibiotics that come in large pellets. I have researched this parasite but found nothing relating to Finches. What should I try to help her to get rid of this protozoa? Mardel has many products such as Tetracycline and Sulpha. She has good days and bad days, but the blood rarely goes away. Any help appreciated.

There are several products available on the net that are formulated specifically for birds. Coccivet and Acox are two of them. I would do some research first - I believe some treat only the symptoms while others actually kill the oocysts when they are shed. (?)

I have used Coccivet previously with my gouldian finches and have not lost a single bird to Coccidiosis ( it is a common illness here during wet or very humid weather. )

Thank you for the information. I Will keep it in my notebook. I prodded my vet until he found the
Pet Apothecary in Milwaukee, WI. It mixes medications for your pet on demand (
rx@petapothecary.com). I got overnight service. They sent a Sulpha based mixture with a syringe. It was pretty harsh and made my Java progressively more ill and I had to stop using it after 12 days. But, it did the job and she is back to her normal self.
