I have a female gouldian that has been puffy ona MD off for 6 weeks. I put her in hospital cage and she seems to perk up after a couple of days and input her back outside in aviary and then she gets puffy again. It's not cold out. Today I caught her and she seems very light and I can definitely feel her sternum (breast bone) more than my other gouldians. I think this is what you call going light. How do I treat this? I can't remember what organism people think this is due to.
Thanks,
Lori

This is an article on "going light"'
http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/featur ... glight.php
It can be a number of things that cause this like an infection or parasites. Have you ever done any type of parasite treatment on her? if you have used a 6% strength when you first got her it might not have been enough. Finches require the 12% to be effective.

Re: Gouldian going light?
When I first goe her in February she came from an outside aviary with many birds and likely wet conditions so I treated them all with the following:
S76
Worm away x 1 day
Sulfa drug
Ronivet s 12%
That was a while ago though so maybe I should re-treat with something?

Re: Gouldian going light?
Lori, before treating her with anything I would keep her warm in a separate hospital cage, the place a call to Ladygouldian.com and ask what they suggest. They will ask you very specific questions and suggest a course of treatment for her. Before calling make not of her droppings, is she having trouble breathing, are her eyes closed, gather anything you see abnormal.
Good luck and please keep us posted.
