Hard finding a healthy bird in my area.

Hello, I am from Springfield MA.

I currently have 3 zebra finches

My main problem is finding healthy birds, mainly finches and canaries.

I used to just go to Petco but of the 3 canaries I got one had a liver problem and lasted 3 years after being treated for it, one had a prolapse thing that females get and the other lasted only a year.
Though the zeeb finches I got where healthy the male lived 5+ years but for some reason the females lived less and I had to keep getting him new wives.

So we found a good breeder who had her birds in her apartment, it was very clean and professional. But sadly she became ill and no longer has her aviary.

They only other aviary I could locate around this area was a person who had a large one outside, must have been 500 or more birds, cages and cages with 20+ of each species in each cage, I do not know if that is normal for aviaries or healthy, but I needed a male zeeb for my lone female and got one, 3 months later and he died. Seemed to be a stroke or something

I do not think I will go back there so I am left with just the local pet store called Daves or Petco.

I have a lone female finch again and wanted to get her another friend, is there any other species that would be compatible say a society finch or should I keep waiting until some zebra finches are in stock at Petco?

Have you checked Craig's list? Are there any bird clubs you could contact ? Have you looked to see if there are any bird fairs coming anywhere close enough to drive to?
I see petfinder has zebra finches that need adoptive homes in Boston.

Good luck!
