Not Sure What's Wrong :(

Post by FinchFlurry » Mon Sep 26, 2011 8:52 am

Before I went to sleep last night, I noticed that my female GS Mia, looked all fluffed up. Maybe it's coincidence this happened after I put in the spectrum daylight lamp?
her eyes kind of look like she's squinting, but they're not closing or anything. She's eating, and still moves around, though shes not as energetic as she used to be...
it looks like she's breathing heavy... and sometimes it looks like she's pushing Viny, my male, away (not always though)

They have seed, eggfood, water, a treat stick in there, and I give them a piece of apple once in a while.

So for now, i turned off the spetrum daylight lamp, and I left my old room lamp on beside the cage for a few hours last night, because I dont have a heat lamp, but i eventually turned it off when they were alsleep. Perhaps I should have left it on all night?

I just hope she's okay. She looks lethargic and puffy and grouchy...

How old is she? If she's young or never had a clutch, she could be eggbound. What her closely today because that can kill them quickly. Give her heat 24 hours, humidity (put cage in bathroom with shower on for a while and door closed) and give her Calcium Plus by beak (one drop) and some in the water.
Otherwise, she may have ASM (air sac mites) or a respiratory infection. Look at the droppings. Do they look liquid or solid? Are they large or normal size? Keep us posted.

The lamp shouldn't be a problem at all. As Deborah said, she may be eggbound. Or she could even be reacting to the stress of a new home. Since your cage is more of a large flight and can't be moved easily, you can wet a cloth or towel, wring it out so it doesn't drip anymore, and wrap that around the sides or front of the cage. You can either get one of those clamp-on lamps at Home Depot and put a 60 watt bulb in it, or you can use any gooseneck-type desk lamp. Set the lamp so that it is near one perch, then Mia can either sit in front of the lamp for the warmth, or she can move away if it gets too warm. For cases of eggbinding, I always keep liquid calcium on hand--one drop directly in the beak works wonders.

As far as diet, Green Singers seem to have a bigger need for greens than other species, make sure they have greens of some sort every day--broccoli, collards, kale, romaine lettuce, etc.

She's young. I got her about a month or 2 ago.
They have a nest in the cage, and they've been working on it, but for a few days now, she hasnt gone near it :(

I'll do what I can to give her heat, I cant move her into the bathroom (i dont have an extra cage right now, and theirs is HUGE) I also have to go to work in an hour and I wont be back until 5.

So i'll keep both the lamps on and shut the curtain so the heat stays in. Would that work okay?

I took photos.. She never would have let me take them, but she just didnt move...

EDIT:

Okay, I'll try the wet towel thing, and until I get a new lamp, my bedside table lamp will have to do. i moved it next the perch. I'll have to buy some liquid calcium. They woud have that at the pet store right?

they have dried greens that my dad bought but that probably isnt enough is it? I'll try the broccoli.

On a lighter note, I just saw Viny feeding her again (its been a while) so im a little relieved, I thought they got sick of eachother, haha.

Alright, so I bought a heat lamp, and its got a dimmer, so thats nice. I clamped it next to her favorite perch. that was about 4 hours ago. I had some crushed oyster shells, and mixed it in with some of the the other food. I also gave them a fresh strawberry, cleaned the whole cage, gave them fresh water and a new bath, and I also bought some nesting materials.

She's looking a lot better already, shes a lot more energetic. I finally see them hopping in and out of the nest... [-o<

When you have an eggbound hen, she will usually look very sick. She'll be puffed up, often sitting on the floor of the cage, wings drooping down, eyes squinty--she'll just look like she feels miserable. Once you've ever seen one, you will know it. And at that point, she would be in big trouble, needing heat and moisture and liquid calcium quick. Just offhand, your little hen doesn't have that miserable look of an eggbound hen. I don't think many petshops carry liquid calcium, unless it is a bird specialty shop. You can order liquid calcium online, both Morning Bird and Bird Care distribute it. There are members here who are vendors where you can order this.

I agree with Sally. She does not look eggbound, but may be getting ready to lay an egg. My hens fluff up just before they lay eggs, but do not act sick. The next day, they are fine and active again until the clutch is laid. After 3-4 eggs are laid, they start incubating and never leave the nest until the eggs hatch and the chicks are about five days old. Good Luck.

Thank you Sally, Deborah

I'll keep a good eye on her, but I think she's okay now.
I'll be sure to order some of the liquid calcium then. I might need it for some other time. then again I hope i dont [-o<

molto grazie my friends

If she is eggound or getting ready to lay an egg the underside of the tail, near the vent looks puffy, heavy and full, rounded in the shape of an egg. Can you notice a difference in her appearance like that?

My aunts bird that I am watching is having the same symptoms you first described except shes sticking to her mate like mad and eating way too much. I think she may be eggbound also, I tried to create a post asking for help but it didn't show up. I don't know what to do

Now that you mention it, she is eating A LOT. She looks pretty round... I've got a heat lamp on one of the perches so she can go when she wants, gave her healthY foods, but other than that, I can't do much..

The exact same thing happened to one of my young zebra hens last year. They try to lean/snuggle with their mates because they seek warmth and comfort. What I did was bring her cage outside and put in on my deck so she could get warmth from the sunlight and fresh air. She was better the next day.

Mostly they just want heat. As hot as possible without going overboard. In the end, she wasn't even eggbound d:

I also had a lamp for her, but all she did was sleep fluffed up under it, tried that for a week with no luck.

Hope all your finches get well soon~
