I came around the corner and stopped to take a peek in on my finches a few minutes ago and to my horror, found my male Zebra finch holding his leg/foot strangely, and on top of that, it was all bloody. I look at his belly and it is also covered in blood. To my horror, I look around and almost all the perches are covered in blood.

I caught him and took a damp washcloth and cleaned up the blood on his belly and his foot. From my best guesses, it looked the like blood originated from a cut on his toe, near his nail. I have no idea how he got cut, and his nails aren't long.

I've placed him in a hospital cage and he hasn't moved from where I've put him. The bleeding appears to have stopped but I'm concerned because there was a ton of blood in that cage and he is such a little bird. Is there anything else I can do for him?

Keep him very warm with a heat lamp, put his food and water near him and let him rest. He should be alright as long as the bleeding has stopped. If he likes boiled egg offer him it, he needs to rest and let his body replenish the blood he lost.

The bleeding has stopped and he seems to be alert, but I noticed when I just checked on him that the toe that was cut I'd all black. Is it bruised or could it be getting infected? I'd hate for him to lose the toe as it it the longest toe on the foot, he doesn't seem to have a problem standing on it.

The toe may be dead, due to loss of blood. I have a Society with all toes non-functional, but he perches fine and flies without a problem.

I use Baby powder when one of my birds is bleeding....it helps to clog the cut.... I keep the Baby powder near by when I'm cutting the long nails...it always help.....good luck...
