Mixing meds?
Can you mix meds with other meds if they both have to be put in the birds water? What about mixing a med in with a multi-vitamin?

Re: Mixing meds?
You have to be careful with this for a few reasons.
- too many substances (meds, vitamins, etc) at once can overload your birds' systems, and they can suffer or die as a result.
- some meds and treatments may counteract each other, making them both less effectvie or completely ineffective.
- some meds may have harmful interactions, that could cause toxic situations
Sometimes these things are specifically indicated on the container, or can be found when ordering online.
For these reasons, many people use a quarantine schedule, often using probiotics and/ or vitamins between meds to help the birds recover and rebuild natural gut flora.
Are there specific meds you are wondering about? If so, I am sure someone on here can help with that. If not, you could contact Larraine at ladygouldian.com to ask.

Re: Mixing meds?
If using Morning Bird Product their web site included a chart to show what you can an can not mix med wise.

When treating I would hault vitamins and mineral that are added to the water, some vitamins and minerals can block or interfer with medicines and antibiotics. Also if feeding charcoal hault that when giving meds, it can interfer with the effectiveness of the meds.

Re: Mixing meds?
Thanks for the links, I will definitely check them out. What about using meds for preventative measures? I was told from the person I got my birds from that I need to treat them with Ronex and Ivermectin. If you use meds as preventatives do you treat your birds for how long the directions tell you to or do you just use it for a day type of thing?

Dayna
My only med treatment is during quarantine, where they go thru a series of meds. Once thru quarantine, no more meds unless they get sick. Although I have been thinking of giving them an S76 treatment cycle maybe 1 or 2x a year.
All medication is given based on the recommended treatment. If it is a 5 day treatment then I give it for 5 days.
When I give different meds, I have at least 2 days between the different medications to try to minimize drug interaction.

Re: Mixing meds?
I personally would allow more time between meds like a 4 to 5 day wait, that way the body has time to clear itself and there with be no cross reaction. During the 4 to 5 day give probiotics and veggies, nurishing foods. During treatment the only food should be seed and pellets if you use them, no veggies...you want the only water source to be their water cup.
