Female gouldian ill - Need help

Post by gosun » Thu Nov 10, 2011 8:37 am

I am a newbie and just bought a gouldian pair 3 weeks back. From today morning the female is not active and she turns her head to back and sleep by resting on its back feather. Hardly ate few seeds and thrice had water. Her tail jerks once in 3 mins(Kind of shivring for 1 sec). In the evening the female is seeing sitting down the cage in the same posture. I have illuminated the cage with 60 Watt light to give some warm based on my reading online.
Kindly advise me on the following:
1. Why this has happened? from yesterday i started giving egg food feed? is it due to that?
2. What i am doing by giving warm is right?
3. Has anyone ever seen this behaviour or have recuperated the bird to normalcy?
4. Kindly help with your expertise / ideas ASAP.

Thanks in advance. :(

If I understand correctly the bird is on the bottom of the cage? Are all three in the same cage? Is there a male as well? She could be eggbound. Put the cage in the bathroom and run hot water at sink or shower to create steam for higher humidity and keep the light bulb on one side of cage for warmth, so she does not use all her energy to stay warm. If you have access to Calcium Plus, give 0.01 cc by beak and add a few drops in water. Watch her closely. Hens can die quickly from being eggbound. If there are other things going on, give us more details. Good Luck.

No there are only two birds. One male which is ok and the other one is female which has the problem. I have moved the male to a separate cage.
I dont think the female is egg bound since i havent witnessed any mating/courting between the pair yet.

Do u still think its a egg bound problem??? Kindly confirm so that i can administer calcium to her... Thanks for your quick response..

..
Birds don't need to mate for females to lay eggs. I believe she could still be eggbound, even if they are not mating.

I am not quite as experienced, but I would do the treatment with humidity, warmth and calcium as advised.
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.
