Signs Of Eggbound?

Post by DanteD716 » Fri Nov 11, 2011 10:54 pm

My female has been with the male for some time now, and has not laid. They have mated several times that I have seen, but is it possible she is eggbound? She does this little, well it's strange, but from watching my birds I have observed every time they have to use the bathroom they like bob their but/tail up and down. Well, she does this as if she must use the bathroom, but doesn't use the bathroom. She does use it, but sometimes she does the bob thing and doesn't. She is healthy, always flutters around her cage and rarely goes to the floor, but spends alot of time in her nestbox. Can she possibly be eggbound? SHe has access to eggshells 24/7, and gets eggfood several times a week along with fresh treats. I'd just like to stay on the safe side. Praying to wake up to find an egg in the box tommorow, wish me luck! [-o<

Dante, you need to get a heat lamp on her right away. Do you have Calcium Plus?

No, I do not. I don't even have a heat lamp, only a heat pad! I am so unprepared. But do you think she could be okay until tommorow? There are no open petstores and this has been goingon for tleast a week. Do eggbound females continue to act normal?

Also, I do have a heater that can keep the room up to 80 degrees at all times because of the heat sensor but I can put it on high power with the sensor off and it will keep the cage well over 85

heating a small spot with concentrated heat is better since if she gets to warm she can move awa from it...I would avoid overheating heating the entire room to 85 it can heat stress the other birds and her out. Between 77 to 80 for the room is fine, use a small heat lamp near where she likes to sit for her to go to as she needs it.

Alright, I'll add a lamp. I just hope she is not eggbound. She seems fine and happy.

Dante, if you don't have a heat lamp, for the time being, you can use a regular old gooseneck desk lamp with a 40-60W bulb in it. Set it up next to the cage near the end of a perch. That should hold you over until you can get a heat lamp and bulb.

Alright, I have quite a few lamps in the basemnt I can try out. And to Cindy, again, off topic but I did get a good look at Ponyo's tail (the male) and there are no marking like that of the black breast. I cannot even remember the name of those things, sand timers? I know what they are I'm just so tired. But he does seem to be lightly pied.

Also look at the vent area as she stands on a perch, does she look swollen or heavy in that area? The swelling should look a bit rounded like a half an egg.

Sand timer and hourglass are not close! I put a lamp next to the cage with a 60 watt bulb, right nect to the highest and her favorite perch. They came out the box to check it out but went back in. I'll check her over right now for the swelling.

 I think I will soon, but I have a question. This lady on on craigslist responded to my add for wanted societies, telling me about her other finches as I am looking to get a new pair of different birds. First she sends me two pictures of what looks like some sort of wasbill and no idea about the other. I asked her what they are as I have never seen one like them an she says gouldians. I keep saying they are not gouldians what are they? She will not tell me what they are, and changes the subject to her gouldians and their price. When I asked wat they were again and if they were available, she said "Yes they are, I will charge you 100 for a pair of gouldians including delivery fee, are you serious or not?" I finnaly said, "Well you refuse to tell me what species they are in the photo! J asked several times. She has not responded, any advice? Also, night everybody!
