Sick RHPF Hen
This morning I found the red headed parrot finch hen all puffed up!
So I moved to a cage on her own with a heat lamp.
I put a little Tetratex in her water.
She was fine yesterday and today on deaths door!
Anything else I should do?

Re: Sick RHPF Hen
So sorry to hear this. Any possibility that she can be egg-bound? If you have liquid calcium, a drop on her beak may help. Keep her warm and in a quiet room. Prayers for her recovery.

God is my redeemer and it is through Him I have found eternal happiness. I am grateful, I am blessed, and I am truly loved. I wish all this and more for all members of our finch forum family. May you all be blessed and highly favored.

Thanks guys!
No, not egg bound, she is thin and her droppings are wet.
I thought maybe she wasn't eating enough or the other two pairs stressed her out because the are breeding.
Fingers crossed!

Wet vent is/can be a sign of possible coccidia....

Jerry, scroll down on the next article to about mid page for info on wet vent...

Coccidia can cause sudden death, parasites can cause wet vent as well as dietary issues but since your bird is thin it might be parasites.

Re: Sick RHPF Hen
When I got home today,
I looked in on her and she looks a lot better.
Not completely out of the woods, but much better!
She even ate a few meal worms and egg food while I was there!
I'm thinking she was overly stressed by the other birds,
and may have not received enough to eat.
The green singers can be very aggressive!
The green singers are ready to lay any day
and the societies have two eggs as of today!
Fingers crossed!

Make sure she is warm hydrated and give her plenty of eggfood, hold off on the veggies, like romaine and ones with high water content. See is that help firm her droppings. If her dropping and her weight do not improve in a day or so I would call ladygouldian.com and ask what else you can do for her.

Re: Sick RHPF Hen
That does sound like coccidiosis.
Keep us informed, Jerry, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her.

Re: Sick RHPF Hen
I had another look in on her before going to bed
and she was bouncing back and forth in the
cage calling to her mate!
It does not look like coccidiosis as her vent is
dry and her poop looks normal.
I am going to give her some water for a bath and see if she is willing!?
I really think it was stress and probable lack of nuritment!

Jerry, by chance did she have lot of veggies the day or day before that may have loosen her stool? Sometimes they gorge on things like romaine and forget their usual foods....the excess water can loosen the stool.

Yes probably too many greens and not enough food and the worse thing, stress! She was way too stressed out by the Bengalese and green singers!cindy wrote:Jerry, by chance did she have lot of veggies the day or day before that may have loosen her stool? Re: Sick RHPF Hen
I think I will have to keep the pair in the breeding cage until the green singers and Bengalese hatch and raise their chicks!
By what I have seen the parrot finches are not aggressive enough to defend themselves with GS's, at least my pair are push overs!

She looks good...hopefully that was it. I usually look at the symptoms and try to consider all possibilities. If she was being bullied or stressed and could not get to the food bowl and ate only veggies that could be why she is thin....Fatten 'er up Jerry!!!!
Hope she continues to improve for you. I had a mixed aviary and finally decided to separate species after to many issues.

It's hard to know sometimes what species will get along and which won't ?
Those little GS's can be the the big bullies of the bunch!
I will need to build them something bigger, the breeding cage isn't really big enough for them to spread their wings!
I have an old budgie cage that I cut apart and I can use
the 4 panels for the front of a good sized flight cage.
Each panel is 24 high x 12 wide
So if I make a box that is 48 wide x 24 high, that would be perfect for them!

Always ensure you only leave the vegies in the cage for a day and then remove them .I would treat you bird with ronex12% to be on the safe side.
