Homemade Electrolyte Recipe

Post by Sally » Thu Jan 05, 2012 4:03 am

Here is a recipe for homemade electrolyte solution for those times when you don't have Pedialyte or similar commercial electrolyte solution on hand. Recipe was contributed by debbie276--thanks for this, Debbie!

To: 8 oz of warm water (about 103 to 105 degrees F)
Add: 1/2 Tablespoon sugar, 1/8 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon baking soda.

Mix well, can be kept in fridge for a few days.
3 Purple Grenadiers, 1 Goldbreast + 1 cat.

My Mom would make this when I was a child anytime I had a stomach virus bug, flu, or even a cold. It kept the body hydrated and your blood sugar levels balanced... actually will make you feel much better :D This is similar to the gloucouse type drip they will put you on when hospitalized for severe food poisioning . Also similar to the ingredients of Gatorade; the rehyrating sports drink...which can be used for birds in a pinch. Also a great quick drink that may save your dogs life if ever in heat exhaustion! I always kept liter bottles at the dog kennel here in Florida...just in case.
Old home remedies are the best... I guess they get lost through modern technology :| Good share, Sally!

Would this be something that is good to give a new bird when you first get it home?

It would probably work, but my preference is to give them NV powder in their water when they are in a stressful situation--new birds, moving, going to the mart.

Thanks as well for sharing this. Wonderful to have this recipe!!!
I have had to give my birds pedialyte before but was without it a few times when the stores were closed.
I might need to mix this up this week if my one finch is not feeling and looking better.

Thanks debbie276 and Sally.
This is wonderful to have this recipe on hand.
I had to have my birds on Pedialyte years ago and remember running out because I didn't buy enough and couldn't get what I needed because the stores were closed late at night and of course a sick bird is a 24hr work shift.
