Worried!!!

Post by PrettyBird » Sun Jan 08, 2012 7:22 pm

OK first Lucy my GS, then my RH gould hen....NOW my RH WB YB/BB male gould! :( Whats going on!?!?

I looked at the cage and see that the male is very puffed up. His eyes are half closed or closed. When I go close he just looks at me with puffed up feathers.

I caught him today to take a listen. And theres no clicking or anything like that. He pecked me a few times when I held him.
Come to think about it I havent heard him sing in a few days either :?

I see him jump around from perch to perch, but hes always puffed up.

Can someone help me out? I DONT want to loose my little Pirate :(

not knowing your setup or what you have tried- I would baycox for coccidiosis/moxidectin for worms and above all heat lamp him in a quiet place partioally covered. I would use broad spectrum antibiotics such as baytril as a last resort.

He also seems to be hiding alot more... I see him hiding behind the plants and such at times. I havent seen him eat much today either.

I dont have any of that medication. Is this what you think it could be?

coccidiosis can happen any time especially if they feel a little bit stressed If you can have a look at his vent and if it looks wet the its the likely cause. If he is inside all the time then that is less likely. If it is this his droppings will look different to normal-very watery, sometimes with green and sometimes with a blood spot. If you are not sure put him near some heat. A 60W globe in a lamp next to the cage but where he can get away from it if he wants. Can you post a pic of his vent, backside to the camera, so I can have a good look. Unfortunately most finch illnesses give similar symptoms so it is hard to tell remotely. Heat is the best bet straight up.

I forgot to mention, with coccidiosis, if you look at him straight on, his wings will be slightly dropped, like if he was too hot, and there will be a slight shiver in the wings at the shoulder, almost like a tiny flutter. You will have to watch him for a couple of minutes to see this. let me know asap if this is the case or not.

Kenny- I tried my best to take a picture of his vent. It is dry. His droppings appear normal. Wings arent fluttering/shaking.
He is just very puffed up and closes his eyes alot, and hasnt eaten much today. I also noticed his tail bobs a bit...
Heres the best pic I could get :?

vent looks fine thankfully so unlikely to be Coccidiosis. Bobbing is usually air sac mite or chest infection. Wheezing is sometimes the only sign, not clicking. Keep him warm and see if he improves. I would give him S76 or whatever you use there which is moxidectin @ 1 drop to the back of the neck and probably and an antibiotic) but if you don't have this make sure you keep him warm until you can see a vet.. Fluffed up is a real illness sign. I think I would definitely worm him if it was me.

*sigh*...ok. I have ordered it last week, so could come sometime this week or the next :( I couldnt find anyone in my city who has it, so had to order it.
I guess all I can do is put a heat lamp on him and pray he will make it till nest week  :(
I hate how these products are so hard to come by! Why do petstores not supply this stuff?!

Jean Tarr from Edmonton carries Morning Bird products so you can pick up some Iverlux. It also treats for ASM.
If you live closer to Calgary Jaquie (not sure of her last name) also carries Morning Bird
Owls, Goulds, European Goldfinch, Red Belly Siskins and Zebs... For now...

Do you think their illnesses are related? Can you give us a run down on what happened with the other birds, can't seem to find the threads they were in.
thanks

No need to be sorry I know you've been trying your best and it just seems it's one after the other. My memory isn't what it used to be and I couldn't remember if you treated them all in a quarantine period or what the out comes were for the other two. Just wondering, did you get them from the same place?
I'll go read the links, thanks
