New Bird Protocol

I am going to be getting a couple of new Society finches. I do not know how well cared for they were prior to my getting them. I plan on quarantining them to their own cage for a while. Should I also treat them with Scatt (for air sack mites), a feather mite and lice spray, and maybe either baytril or Raynex (sp?)? Not all at the same time obviously? Or should I just separate them, watch and then treat as necessary? I just don't want my current birds to get sick.

I have gone and looked at and watched these birds. None seem particularly unhealthy. None are sleeping during the day when I go to see them, none are poofed up or have droopy feathers, and they seem active and perky with relatively clean droppings.

I would treat with scatt and de-worm them and then I would watch and treat if needed.

If you use them for fostering they need to be free of Campylobacter and Cochlosoma, there is no treatment to cure them.

Not sure what you mean but lice spray will not treat ASM, it's only good for external mites. ASM can be treated with S76, Iverlux or Scatt. De-worming is treated with something like worm-away not ronex. Ronex is a treatment for protozoal infections.

They will not be fosters. I just like Societies. For now they are my chosen finch species. I will eventually move on to owls and maybe rccbs (perhaps in March). For now though, I just like the finches.

I know that a feather mite and lice spray does not treat ASM. I am getting scatt for that. I didn't think of de-worming but I guess that's because my first venture into societies, I knew I was getting very healthy birds. This time, I think the birds are healthy, but I just want to run the through the paces to make sure and wasn't sure of the procedure.

Could I just get worm-away online? What's a good site for that?

I use Laraine's original quarantine plan modified with input from Tiffany
I treat with a series of meds. I treat ALL my incoming birds the same way. That way I know what they went through.

- SCATT + lice spray when they come home
- Baycox
- Ronex
- WormAway

For sensitive birds I use S76 instead of SCATT

The whole quarantine/treatment process takes either 48 days with SCATT or 53 days with S76.

Any online birds store should have worm-away.

I treat all incoming birds with Cocci Care, Iverlux/Scatt, Ronex 12 %, Worm Away, and give Probiotic inbetween for the gut flora. Then, the whole flock receive Cocci Care 3 times a year and Worm Away 2 times a year and others as needed.
