male zebra finch bleeding from body help please!

Post by jazii » Sun Jan 29, 2012 9:12 pm

Hi, I'm a new finch owner to 4 finches. 2 male and 2 female. Yesterday, I had the 2 male finches (Pingu & Bajoo) in the same indoor aviary and awoke to find Pingu had attacked Bajoo to the point that his blood was all over the perches :( I separated them and the blood ended up covering his perches but eventually the bleeding stopped. I was due to pick up to females (Vanilla & Cinnamon) for them. I have had to house Bajoo with the younger female (Cinnamon) as Pingu is quite the aggressor toward her also. This morning I have noticed Bajoo is attacking Cinnamon (she's still very young, too young to mate yet I think) and I'm not sure what To do :/ Pingu and Vanilla have already nested and I'm a little aprehensive about moving Cinnamon in with them because of Pingu's territorial attitude. I have to wait 4 days befor I can get another aviary/cage and am quite concerned about this young female getting beaten up by Bajoo. (I guess Bajoo's bleeding has freaked me out abit and I've become rather over protective) Can anyone please help me??? Also, I'm pretty certain Vanilla and Pingu will have eggs soon, can anyone please explain to me what I should and shouldn't be doing once she's laid them etc?? Thanks :) ps. I have put the two separate cages next to each other, is this ok to do? I have placed a towel between them so they can't see each other as it seemed it made Bajoo upset.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems with your finches already. Often, two pairs of Zebras together will encourage territorial behavior, you have done right to separate them for now. The aggressive behavior on the part of Bajoo towards Cinnamon may be because even though he can't see the other pair, he can hear them. I would separate the cages, putting them in separate rooms, so they can't hear each other, and see if that helps. You will have to keep a close eye on them.

I agree with Sally, also if the male continues to be aggressive to the little female is the cage big enough to put a barrier up to divide the cage, the male on one side and the female on the other?

Update on my injured finch. He is doing fine now :) and I've kept him in with the little female :) they seemed to have taken a liking to each other! He had a small bleed on his toe yesterday because I tried taking the towel away and he flew into the side of the cage (ithink) I'm unable to move them to a separate room but with the towel up between the two cages, it seems to diffuse any arguing :) I'm getting another of the small indoor aviarys next week so Bajoo and Cinnamon have more room :)
Thanku for ur help :) as they are my very first birds ever, I was panicking a lot when I saw all that blood! I'm just so happy Bajoo seems back to his active ways :) Cinnamon seems to be growing up too, she's flying around more and her and Bajoo have taken to sleeping in the nest instead of on the perch :)

Sounds like you will have eggs soon.
