Just lost another penguin zebra

Post by ac12 » Sun Feb 19, 2012 3:28 am

Seems his "buddy" plucked him too much.
My wife got him into an isolation cage, but he was probably plucked too much and was going downhill. And my wife did not know what else to do, besides getting him away from the plucker. Too bad as he was my first and favorite of my penguins. He was a small guy compared to the other penguins.

In hind sight I wonder if I should have kept him alone, so he would not be picked on. But I thought he was getting along w his cage mate. How these guys can suddenly turn on their cage mate?

This would be the 2nd zebra that died from being BADLY plucked.
The zebra that was plucked and pecked at to bleeding, has almost recovered.
This zebra aggression is really trying on me.

So sorry Gary. I think the plucking and stress on the bird takes a toll on the bird.

I'm sorry to hear about your little zebra.

I have zebras also and I have to say their agression is trying my patience. I have a couple that get along really well, and I'm enjoying their company, but for the most part I can't believe zebras are recommended for beginners.

I hope your other ones are doing well.

So sorry to hear you lost one. I believe with zebras, you really need to monitor them and remove one if you noticed aggression as soon as possible. They can make a breeder very stressed too.

Awwww I am sorry for your loss. I know their are alot of zebra people on here but that is the one reason why I will never own them. My mom had them and they were so darn mean to eachother it amazed me sometimes. She finally sold them all and now she is hoping for either a gouldian from me or a red factor baby..... :D

I have had aviaries for Zebbies with some no aggression problems and others big problems. I personally dont like the Zebra aggressive side, howwever I am sure this applies to other breeds as well. My main issue with them is that they out compete most other breeds and gouldians particularly are very reluctant to breed with them in the aviary. Nevetherless it must be understood that zebras have been one of the most successful finches in Australian aviculture and in the wild and you have to give credit to them for their tenacious ability to survive in very trying and desolate conditions. I dont keep them now because I found them stressful but I must say that when I have visited friends in city apartments with a cage of zebbies in the main living area the constant movement and pretty cheaping did bring the place alive. very tough little guys!!!
