My hen has a closed eye and her equilibrium is all messed up and fear she will die. Closed shut and don't know what to do for her, plus she stopped feeding the last chick left from her disorientation.
Any ideas on her eye to open it A-sap? I've been trying warm water, and may use a mini drop of mineral oil and her eye is Closed SHUT--not yelling.
BTW, what is the best general Mite Death dust or spray on a maintenance program?
Hope your male is better.

There are several things can that be causing the eye problem, but I would think that it's the closed eye that's affecting her balance. I have a society that has had terrible eyes - one keep puffing badly and closing, and the other the same to a lesser extent. I checked on a society board, and was told that if it's conjunctivitis to put him on erythromycin (an antibiotic you can get at the petstore under the brand name Ornacyn Plus). I'm also cleaning it with warm water and a cotton ball to keep it from crusting closed, and will give him a probiotic when I'm done with the antibiotic.

Other causes could be that she has something in her eye (Kenny responded to a previous post saying in that case to bathe the eye in a saline solution), or that she has ornithosis/one-eyed cold (treated with doxycycline).

Her eyes are open, I used boric acid 01% solution and predlazone drops. But her head or neck is all twisted upside down to her left, as it was thinking it was the eye sight problem.
She eats and drinks but her neck is badly twisted. She wanted a bath last night and sprayed her. Now she looks pretty, both eyes open and her head is not literally upside down. I can't believe she's still alive after all she's gone through.
Very perplexing~!

Your bird may have mold, it happened with one of my Javas. First one eye closed then the other eye closed and he stopped eating, took him to the vet and left him there for 3 days where they hand fed him for 3 days, he got back home and I had to give him antibiotics by hand for a week afterwards...now he is the biggest pain in the butt you could imagine, full of beans but I know that he is grateful

She is still alive and saw her baby for the first time as a fledgling, they recognized each other really fast.
Eyes are "wide open" but her neck is twisted and her head is completely upside down like a neurological disorder. She eats, drinks and bathes (heat lamp) but her head is upside down and she flies straight down to her left like a rock.
Very frustrating and we have no avian vets here.
I have no idea what she has but she's hanging on.

Could this be 'star-gazing'? I'm not familiar with it, they are supposed to twist their heads upside down, but I don't think they leave their head in that position all the time.

RW/WB,

I'm at the Fire Dept. working shift today. You didn't mention what species of bird this is, but if it's a Gouldian, it sounds more like twirling, which is a nuerological problem, and can passed on genetically.

E-mail Michele at fairestfinches@mchsi.com . We know of several breeders that have had some success with treating this, and the birds recovering from it.

Thanks~!
She's a normal Gould, except she can not get her head straight. Every sick one I've ever had has died within 3 days of getting sick, but this one doesn't seem sick, just that twisted neck. It's been since right before Christmas and she has not improved.
She keeps herself very clean, she looks good and seems to accept it. When I brought her fledgling to her, she attacked me but falls.
It's so sad to see her like this.........
