Emergency (Gouldian)

Post by Cath1068 » Sat Apr 21, 2012 7:16 am

This started yesterday with my juvie boy. He appearred to be just limping favoring his right leg. He was sleeping alot, not fluffed or half slit eyes. This morning wjen I got up and the lights turned on he literally fell off the perch onto the cage floor and held his wings open. He cannot use his legs at all. Its like they are paralized and his toes are curled as well. I was able to easily pick him up and I put him in a hospital cage with a heat lamp and water/seed on the bottom as he cant perch at all. I fear that he wont last the day while I am at work. If I had a small enough cage I could bring him with me at put him in the wellness room but I dont.

Any ideas ? I am sooooooooo sad and really dont have a clue as to what happened to my singy boy..... :(

It could be possible. He is about 9 months old and it would figure that this had to happen to my favorite gouldian...... I just put him on a heating pad on low and was watching him trying to get around using his wings as legs....... I am soooooo stumped as to what could have happenned cuz he was normal as of yesterday morning. Singing, eating, drinking and doing his mating hop to my wb hen.

Edit
I thought I should also mention that when I was holding him he doesnt feel or sharp in the breastbone. No discharge from eyes, mouth or nose and his poop is normal also. There isnt any raspy or clicking noises when he breathes either.

I just thought of something else. Hopefully this is the real problem [-o< He may have hit his head during a night fright and is just stunned  Let's hope that is all it is [-o< Someone else should be around soon with some other ideas.

Very well could be a result of a night fright. I do keep a 40watt red bulb on at night but he still could have hit his head. Whatever has happened it is getting worse and he is deteriorating cuz yesterday he was able to fly eat and drink but today he cant. I so wish they could talk to us to tell us what is wrong with them as this is breaking my heart.

I'm so sorry to hear this Cath. Night fright is a good possibility and I think you are doing everything I can think of at this time as well. You are keeping him comfortable and warm with food and water close by. I'm so sorry.

it is highly inlikely to be a stroke. In my experience 2 things have produced the syptoms you desribe-a bump on the head or exposure to a toxic substance. If you can eliminate the second issue, it is most likely a bump on the head. Only heat and rest will assist if tha is the case. Hope it all turns out OK for your bird

Cath, I am so sorry to hear that your gouldian passed. I had a similar situation where one of my gouldians suddenly became ill and passed away; I still don't really even know what happened. It is heartbreaking and not knowing why makes it even harder. My heart goes out to you

Thank you all sooooooo very much. This is my first bird loss and I didnt realize just how hard it could be. Fought tears all day and my flight just feels empty even though I still have my original 3 and my bccb. They dont sing for me like he did. I am sure a few days may help me feel a little better but not knowing what happened his what hurts alot. Maybe tommorrow at the bird show one pretty male may stand out like my singy boy did and just maybe that male will come home with me..... :D
