Society Balding Head

Post by LisaB53 » Sat Apr 21, 2012 8:08 am

Hi Everyone,

I wish that I could include a picture of my finch Pearl but my camera is currently on loan to a friend.

I noticed is hair line, ha ha, feathers starting to recede from his beak back. At first I thought he might be getting picked by the other three finches so I put the divider in the cage and kept him seperate. He continued to lose more feathers on the top of his head. Last year one of my other finches had a bloodied head and it was thought it had to do with trouble moulting. I used antibiotic cream on his head for a few days and everything cleared up. I tried the cream for a few days on Pearl but it didn't do anything for him. I do notice that he is scratching the top of his head alot and I have looked when putting cream on for any sign of bugs or mites on his head. I haven't seen anything however it seems like the skin on his head is now getting thicker or harder, not sure how to describe it. I think if I could get him to stop scratching things would clear up.

Does anyone have any idea what I could put on his head to sooth it enough to get him to stop scratching?

Lisa

1 drop of scatt to the back of the neck will sort out any bugs he might have but you need to sure he has mites before you use it. There are cortezone based medications for birds which must be prescribed by a vet. I am reluctant to give you advice on this without a picture and/or proper diagnosis. Could you provide some more information like cage set up-number of birds in cage etc.

My societies are in the HQ double flight cage so it is 64 inches long. There are only four of them in the cage. It was excatly the same time last year this sort of thing happen to the other bird.

I hope I can soon get this straightened out. I hate to see my beautiful birds missing feathers.
